‎ÉDITION ORIGINALE, bien complète du tome supplémentaire qui manque souvent. Elle comporte une figure gravée « composée d'après les monuments du XIIIe siècle et qui représente un chevalier en armure ». Une édition en cinq volumes in-12 paraîtra à la suite en 1781. Dès le dernier quart du XVIIIe siècle, la curiosité pour la littérature du moyen-âge, à peu près négligée sinon méprisée depuis le XVIe, se traduit par la publication d'éditions accessibles, de traductions, d'adaptations ou de simples analyses d'ouvrages, de ces oeuvres singulières et méconnues. A la suite de l'érudit Barbazan (1696-1770), Legrand d'AUSSY (1737-1800), qui fut conservateur des manuscrits français de la Bibliothèque Nationale, commence en 1779 la publication de son recueil de contes et fabliaux, d'une approche plus scientifique, et qui contient des notes historiques et critiques. Cet ouvrage est d'un enseignement précieux sur les goûts littéraires de la société du temps et plus spécialement sur la genèse des idées romantiques. « Ce recueil contient un grand nombre de morceaux piquants par la naïveté et par le ton satirique, double caractère qui distingue éminemment les ouvrages des plus anciens de nos poètes ; aucun livre ne fait mieux connaître les moeurs d'une époque qui ne mérite pas tous les regrets qu'on est tenté de lui accorder […] » (Weiss, Histoire de la vie privée des Français, Paris, 1782).
