‎SMITH, Adam (1723-1790)‎

‎An Inquiry into The Nature and Causes of The Wealth of Nations‎

‎London: J. Maynard and others 1811. EconomicsFINELY BOUND a later edition. Complete in three volumes. Octavo 22 x 14 x 9cm pp.lxxi; 360; pp.vi; 514; pp.vi; 448; unpaginated index. Original marbled-calf boards respined to style with gilt rules black leather title labels combed marble ends. Norman Court monogrammed leather book label to pastedowns of each volume contents clean some vintage pencil marginalia within small marginal paper loss p.x of vol.1 corners and board edges a little rubbed and worn covers pleasingly aged. A very good set. Smith's monumental work in attractive nineteenth century boards. Reputedly stolen by Gypsies at the age of three Smith grew up to become one of the pillars of the Scottish Enlightenment winning fame as a moral philosopher as well as an economist. In 'The Wealth of Nations' Smith laid the intellectual foundations for a liberal free-market society and in so doing revolutionised the understanding of how societies governments and markets interact. He always insisted from 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' onwards that the 'invisible hand of the market' would regulate capitalist impulses and channel excessive behaviour into productive and beneficent projects. 'The Wealth of Nations' further addresses questions of sovereignty of colonies the origins of coinage and the concept of credit all of which would have a profound influence on the germinating United States of America which declared independence in July 1776 the same year that Smith's work was first published. ‎SMITH, Adam (1723-1790); John Ramsay M'CULLOCH (1789-1864)‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. With a Life of the Author an Introductory Discourse Notes and Supplemental Dissertations. Fourth Edition Corrected and Improved‎

‎Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black;: and Longman Brown Brown Green & Longmans London 1850. 8 3/4 x 5 9/16 inches. Half-title Title vi i-lxvi 1-685 advertisement leaves. Largely uncut and unopened. Illustrated with two portraits of Smith by Scottish engravers Robert Charles Bell 1806-1872 and John Kay 1742-1826. In brown cloth with decorative blind tooling spine gilt. Slight wear to the top and bottom of spines.

Few works cast as long and enduring a shadow as Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations in the pantheon of economics theory and beyond. Originally authored in the throes of the Enlightenment Wealth of Nations remains an intellectual colossus a foundational treatise that paved the pathways of modern economics. Its exploration of market dynamics the "invisible hand" and the division of labour presents core concepts that weave through the epochs of economic thought. The present edition published in Edinburgh in 1850 contains contributions by John Ramsay M'Culloch an economist and a luminary of his own time. In his 'Introductory Discourse' M'Culloch comprehensively contextualized Smith's magnum opus with portraits of political science before the time of publication upon publication and after the publication of Wealth of Nations thus emphasising its discipline-defining significance and connecting eras of economic contemplation. In his analysis of the "Progress of economy since the publication of the Wealth of Nations" M'Culloch demonstrated how the work reverberated with his own era's questions and dialogues by responding to his contemporaries such as Thomas Robert Malthus Jean-Baptiste Say and David Ricardo. In doing so M'Culloch reminded readers of the enduring value of Smith's work to serve as a guide to the ever-present and ever-pressing dilemma: how to make a capitalist economy more humane and more meaningful. and Longman, Brown, Brown, Green & Longmans, London unknown‎

‎Smith, Adam‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell In the Strand 1979. Bicentenary edition of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Quarto 2 volumes bound in full brown morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands marbled endpapers. One of one thousand copies this is number 492. In fine condition. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. Accompanied by a small booklet printed in Japanese by W.B. Todd and K.E. Carpenter titled 'Bibliographical Story of The Wealth of Nations' laid in and the original numbered shipping box. An exceptional example of this landmark work. First published in 1776 Adam Smith's masterpiece The Wealth of Nations is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of and the principles behind modern capitalism. It took Smith ten years to produce An Inquiry into the Wealth of Nations. His commentary during such an incremental time the first years of the Industrial Revolution sought to reform outdated theories of mercantilist and physiocratic economic thought with broader concepts that we are all familiar with today such as the division of labor productivity and free markets. An important theme that persists throughout the work is the idea that the economic system is automatic and when left with substantial freedom able to regulate itself. This is often referred to as the “invisible hand.†The ability to self-regulate and to ensure maximum efficiency however is limited by a number of external forces and “privileges†extended to certain members of the economy at the expense of others. The 1776 publication of An Inquiry into The Wealth of Nations was the first of only five editions that were published in Adam Smith’s lifetime and greatly influenced a number of economists and philosophers of his time and those that followed including Jean-Baptiste Say Alexander Hamilton Thomas Malthus and Ludwig von Mises. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control. The Wealth of Nations is not a system but as a provisional analysis it is complete convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM. Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, In the Strand hardcover‎

‎SMITH, Adam‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎Edinburgh: for Mundell Doig and Stevenson; Lackington Allen and Co. Cradock and Joy and T. Hamilton London; and Wilson and Son York 1809. One of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status Second Edinburgh edition of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM. This edition includes a 66-page Life of Smith and two essays by Germain Garnier 1754-1821 comparing Smithian economics with the contemporary approach of the French school. The British copyright for the Wealth of Nations expired in 1804. The following year William Playfair 1759-1823 brought out in London an edition universally derided for its editorial liberties and for exorcising any suggestion of Smithian radicalism in the aftermath of the French Revolution. The first Edinburgh edition criticized Playfair extensively but by 1809 the debate had moved on and these criticisms have been themselves been exorcised here. Following the first publication of the Wealth of Nations in 1776 Smith moved to Edinburgh to take up a post as commissioner of customs. He remained in the city until his death in 1790. Scotland informed much of his analysis in the Wealth of Nations which was written in Kirkcaldy 11 miles north of the capital. For Donald Winch Smith was "a North Briton who regarded Scotland not merely as his home but as the best place from which to observe the affairs of the capital with the minimum of involvement in party politics" ODNB. 3 vols octavo 207 x 128 mm. Tables in the text. Contemporary sprinkled calf spines ruled and decorated in gilt and with twin red and dark green morocco labels edges sprinkled blue. Light bumping and wear minor worming foxing and offsetting to contents: a very good copy. Tribe 96; Vanderblue p. 14. unknown‎

‎SMITH, Adam‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎Dublin: Printed by N. Kelly and William Porter for P. Wogan Gilbert and Hodges W. Porter J. Moore and B. Dornin 1801. Political economy and the Anglo-Irish union Fourth Irish edition of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM in a handsome contemporary Irish binding. Towards the end of the Wealth of Nations Smith outlines an expansive and audacious plan for the political-economic consolidation of the British Empire. In this plan Ireland was to be united with Great Britain in a move largely modelled on the Anglo-Scottish union of 1707. Smith stresses the political and economic benefits to the Irish anticipating that the move would end British trade restrictions and even neutralize the fractious nature of Irish politics. Ironically Smith's wider theories of political economy in the Wealth of Nations were often co-opted by Irishmen diametrically opposed to his political proposals most notably the United Irishman Arthur O'Connor 1763-1852 whose approach to democratic land reform was "a radicalised version of Smith's political economy" Andersen. The United Irishmen mounted a rebellion in 1798 the failure of which led to precisely the Anglo-Irish union advocated by Smith. This fourth Irish edition was the first to be published in the newly formed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. 2 vols octavo 204 x 131 mm pp. xiii 1 498; viii 489. 61; lacking blank A1 in vol. ‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Dobson 1796. In an unrestored binding from the early years of the republic Second American edition of the "greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM a key influence on the founding fathers and the development of the young republic. First published in 1776 the Wealth of Nations includes several sections focusing on specifically American concerns. The work analyses the deteriorating British-American relationship at length and reflects approvingly on several aspects of American life most particularly the colonial separation between church and state. The work consequently won praise and attention from the founding fathers: Madison included it in his list of core items for the proposed congressional library while Jefferson judged it "the best book extant" on political economy quoted in Fleischacker p. 903. For Fleischacker the influence was still more fundamental: "America has a Constitution that in the functions it gives to government the structure its sic provides for the military and the strict separation it proclaims between religious and secular powers fits Smith's conception of politics better than any government of his day" p. 924. 3 vols duodecimo 172 x 103 mm. ‎Smith, Adam‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎London: Printed for A. Strahan and T. Cadell in the Strand 1789-1793. Mixed early edition set of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Octavo 3 volumes bound in one quarter modern calf over cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and five raised bands to the spine. Volumes I and III are seventh editions 1793 Vol. II is a fifth edition 1789. In near fine condition. An attractive set. Adam Smith's masterpiece first published in 1776 is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of and the principles behind modern capitalism. Printed for A. Strahan and T. Cadell, in the Strand hardcover‎

‎SMITH, Adam‎

‎An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.‎

‎Glasgow: printed by and for J. & J. Scrymgeour and for Mundell & Son and Arch. Constable & Co. Edinburgh 1805. One of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status An early edition of a foundational work of economics and the first to include a biography of Smith. "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading critical and adulatory long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" ODNB. This was "the first post-copyright three volume edition" Tribe - the copyright had lapsed in 1804 following first publication in 1776. The biography draws heavily on Dugald Stewart's memoir of Smith first published in 1795 while incorporating later biographical material and was frequently reprinted in the first half of the nineteenth century. The "view of the doctrine of Smith" is a translation of Garnier's preface to the 1802 French edition of Smith's works - "this translation is the base from which all later editions worked modifying in time only spelling and punctuation" Tribe. Glasgow the place of publication was more formative for Smith than any other Scottish city: he entered the university aged fourteen and later held chairs in logic and moral philosophy there forming close associations with figures such as David Hume James Watt and Robert Foulis. 3 vols octavo 204 x 122 mm. Contemporary marbled calf twin black labels gilt ornaments to smooth spines blue speckled edges. Slight rubbing and tiny wear to spines and extremities very minor loss to label lettering light foxing to contents. A very good copy. Tribe 87. unknown‎
