A fine copy of the rare octavo edition of Webster's unabridged dictionary the last that Webster published before his death in 1843. This is the textually best edition published in Webster's lifetime incorporating his final revisions some 5000 new definitions and a preface and introduction "on the origin history and connection of the languages of western Asia and Europe with an explanation of the principles on which languages are formed." Skeel notes that 3000 copies of this edition were printed fewer than the 5 or 6 thousand that Webster wanted but more than the 2500 of the 1828 first edition. A prospectus Skeel 585 advertised the edition at $13 sheep and $14 calf gilt. The work was in the press for over a year; a note in Webster's hand on a copy in the Connecticut State Library states "First signature of this edition impressed Oct. 22 1839. Last sheet impressed January 30 1841 15 months & days." The edition sold slowly with nearly half of the run still in sheets at the time of Webster's death. An attractive copy bearing the ownership signatures of George W. Turner dated the year he bought the mansion and farm of Elmscourt now Elms Court in Natchez Mississippi. Skeel 586; cf. Springfield MA: George and Charles Merriam 1848. First Merriam Webster Edition. Leather bound. 1367pp. Very thick quarto 27 cm Brown leather with a black leather spine label. Marbled edges and endsheets. Good. The covers and spine are rubbed and have numerous dark stains. There are a couple of scrapes in the leather of the rear board. The longer scrape measures 2 and 1/2 inches. There is a large loss from the leather at the foot of the spine that measures 2 and 1/4 inches tall by 1 and 1/4 inches wide. The marbled edges are faded. There are five or so very small dark stains on the edges of the text block. The edges of the endsheets are darkened and the flyleaves are mildly soiled. There is a contemporary owner's name on the front free endsheet. The frontispiece is offset on the surrounding pages. There is a former owner's ink stamp on the front flyleaf. There is a contemporary owner's name along with a brief notation on the top edge of the Preface page. This notation is faintly mirrored on the title page. There is another contemporary owner's name in pen on the rear flyleaf that is also offset on surrounding pages. There are stains in the centers of pp. 364-422. The largest and darkest stains are in the middle of this section and measure 1 and 1/4 inches tall by 1 and 1/4 inches wide. The stains do not obscure the text. Occasional light staining very small dark stains and foxing on the pages. There are sporadic light moisture stains in the corners and edges of the pages. The larger stains are 3 inches tall by 3 inches wide and they become slightly darker on the last several pages. The pages are mildly browned. The book is sturdy. Noah Webster strongly believed in developing the cultural independence of the United States a chief component of which was to be a distinctive American language with its own idiom pronunciation and style. Goodrich." 2 notable "flaws" affect the leather binding a separation at the front hinging of the spines top of nearly 2" and the spine itself has what seems to be a largely superficial cracking at its center will attempt to show both in foto. The hard leather covers have other age appropriate scarring and abrasion all of a relatively minor nature. Upper tips have abrasion thru leather and lower back tip is notably bumped. The original owner has lightly penciled his name/date 1850 and so forth on the first endsheet and at the top of the title page. While the text has full edge marbling 2 issues are worth mention top is age or dust darkened and the fore-edge may have had a few unopened leaves which have been opened with slight roughness leaving imperfections of @ 1/64th". The text approaches heavily foxed and has the swaling as laid flat it is imperfectly so hilly this said the text does not seem brittle all is well legible and all is present including the extensive appendixes and advertisements. The paste downs and endsheets show their age predictably the last p.d. has a small imperfection as though a 1/4" droplet of candle wax was removed and left residue. The book has been stored in acid free glassine bag and will be shipped in same. Massive book over 1152 pages measures slightly over 9 3/4 x 6 1/2".
