This is the original first edition--please refer to Wikipedia for an explanation of editions prior versions and the significance of this the 1864 edition. Leather bound 1538 pages of word definitions 1768 pages in total including appendices. CONDITION: Leather cover quite worn and slightly bowed outward endpapers split at hinges but boards still securely held a few loose pages but no pages missing other than prior to page v of the Preface as described above a few torn pages; considerable foxing and tanning throughout and some dampstain but no mildew or mustiness. Brattleboro VT: Holbrook and Fessenden 1823. Leather. Fair. 158p. A leatherbound book in POOR CONDITION. The front cover is badly torn and weakly held together with clear tape. The spine and back cover are heavily chafed as well. Pages edges worn and last page of text torn. Foxing and toning throughout. Pages remain tightly bound despite external damage. OFFERED AS-IS. After Webster's copyright expired in 1818 there were numerous pirated editions of his spelling book. This is an edition from Vermont printed in 1823. Holbrook and Fessenden unknown
Holbrook and Fessenden Brattleborough VT 1827. Revised Edition. Hardcover Quarter Leather. Poor Condition. Book Skeel 220. The revised impression with the latest corrections. The title page lacks a date but she dates it as 1827 based upon Table LII Of Numbers which provides examples of Roman numerals the last being for 1827 p. 144. She describes this printing as "Undated and different in make-up from other Holbrook and Fessenden editions. . This edition resembles most closely that of Middletown 1829." OCLC shows no holdings for this particular printing though Skeel in 1958 reported seven copies at Yale Harvard the Henry Ford Museum NYPL Columbia University Western Reserve Historical Society and Middlebury College. Size: 5"-6" - Vigesimo-quarto 24mo. 168 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight. The first few pages are are folded at the bottom corner. A few internal pages 87-92 are folded at the upper corner. The illustrations for the fables are similar to Alexander Anderson's first set Plate XIII in Skeel but some of them have been reversed from his originals. The rag paper is supple. Some pages in the middle 75-111 have a tide mark at the gutter. Exposure to moisture may have resulted in the small white dry bumps adhering to the surface on the pages up to 68. Bound with a leather spine and blue paper over wooden boards. The outside paper of the front cover has perished along with over a third of the board itself exposing the cloth ribbons. The front pastedown is loose has lost the bottom corner and is tattered at the middle of the outside edge from the sharp edges of the board.
