Nevertheless offered for its magnificent engravings. Contains 16 of the original 18 engravings of female saints - lacking the engravings of St. Therese and St. Adelaide - together with brief biographies of all 18 women by Georges Darboy 1813-1871 then a French Catholic priest later bishop of Nancy then archbishop of Paris. Archbishop Darboy was among a group of prominent hostages executed as the Paris Commune of 1871 was about to be overthrown. The engravings are the star of this production made from paintings by prominent French artists of the time including: Henri-Frederic Schopin Charles Zacharie Landelle Louis-Edouard Dubufe Felix-Joseph Barrias Pierre Duval Le Camus Francois-Claudius Compte-Calix and Tony Johannot. Thanks to tissue guards over most of them and the high-quality heavy stock on which they were printed they have largely been spared the sometimes heavy foxing found throughout the rest of the volume and are largely suitable for framing. Included are Saints Genevieve Agnes Paule Bathilde Felicite Marie Egyptienne Monique Clotilde Marguerite Claire Jeanne de Chantal Rose de Lima Justine Elisabeth de Hongrie Cecile and Catherine d'Alexandrie. ‎Exemplaire revêtu d'une agréable reliure du temps. Il recèle une jolie page de titre chromolithographiée avec rehauts à l'or et s'agrémente en outre de 12 jolies planches gravées à pleine-page d'après Johann Friedrich Overbeck. Natif de Lûbeck, ''cet artiste tient une place importante dans l'art allemand du XIXème comme créateur du mouvement Nazaréen en Allemagne [...]. Il professait ce qu'il appelait les ''trois voies de l'art'''' : la fantaisie représentée par Michel-Ange, la beauté, représentée par Raphaël ; la nature, représentée par Dürer. Son influence dans l'évolution de la peinture allemande conduisit aux premiers indices du passage du classicisme à une sensibilité pré-romantique''. (in Bénézit). Chacune des pages du texte est serti d'un large encadrement figuratif par Rouargue.
