As a youth McCreight lived among the Dakota Sioux. He became a trader in bison bones which were sold for fertilizer and which for a while were readily available. He was befriended by Buffalo Bill Cody. He became an ardent friend to Native Americans but particularly to the Sioux nation. He was made an honorary chief of the tribe as Chief Tchanta Tanka or Cante Tanke Later as a banker in Pennsylvania he did much to promote the causes of the Native Americans and helped his friend Theodore Roosevelt to create the park system.
