Jahrhundert Nach dem Zusammenbruch des »Dritten Reiches« sah sich die Weltöffentlichkeit mit der Tatsache konfrontiert, daß ein »zivilisierter Staat« zum Verbrecher werden und seine Greueltaten im Schutz des Souveränitätsprinzips ungestört begehen konnte. Das Fehlen einer internationalen Gerichtsbarkeit und vor allem einer adäquaten Durchsetzungsinstanz machte sich drastisch bemerkbar. In seiner systematischen, historisch fundierten Darstellung der Völkermorde und genozidären Massaker im 20. Jahrhundert grenzt Yves Ternon den Genozid von anderen Formen der Massenmorde ab und definiert ihn als planmäßige Vernichtung bestimmter sozialer, ethnischer oder religiöser Gruppen durch einen verbrecherischen Staat. Am Beispiel der Bürger- und Befreiungskriege in Asien, Afrika und Südamerika bis hin zu den Blutbädern im ehemaligen Jugoslawien arbeitet er mit Hilfe einer interdisziplinären Analyse die Mechanismen heraus, die ein Regime zum organisierten Verbrecher werden lassen, wobei auch Vergleiche mit früheren Jahrhunderten nicht fehlen. Dabei bedient er sich der klassischen Methode der Kriminalistik: Wer sind die Täter? Wer sind die Opfer? Was sind die Motive? Wem nützt das Verbrechen? Gibt es Komplizen? ‎Jérusalem - Petite histoire des Juifs ou les Drames du Ghetto - La Jument errante. — "Le Chemin d'Israël, publié non sans réticence chez Plon en 1948, est un centon composé de trois extraits d'ouvrages publiés avant la guerre. Il n'est tiré qu'à 8800 exemplaires. Dans l'avant-propos, l'éditeur prend ses distances avec ses auteurs : ces courts récits « composent une sorte d'histoire d'Israël, telle du moins qu'elle apparaît à des écrivains qui ne sont ni des exégètes, ni des historiens, encore moins des philosophes, mais seulement des esprits rêveurs qui aiment se pencher sur un peuple passionnant entre tous ». Très vite, l'éditeur écrit à ses auteurs : "Contrairement à ce que vous pensiez et comme nous le craignions un peu d'avance, le chiffre des commandes reçues jusqu'à ce jour montre bien que les libraires sont réticents.." Le livre se vend mal et suscite de nouvelles réactions. « Contrairement sans doute à votre volonté, mais effectivement, vous avez contribué à entretenir et attiser l'antisémitisme », leur écrit un compositeur de musique de Neuilly, qui se dit déconcerté par un ouvrage où voisinent des notations justes et « des affirmations erronées qui ressemblent aux calomnies de Goebbels et Julius Streicher ».
