‎Mithraism and Christianity. A Study in Comparative Religion.‎

‎1st edition.Ex Royal Holloway College library. Pp.102, college bookplate to inside front board, scuffing and toning to front endpaper. Green cloth, original paper label to spine toned, scuff to base of spine. Good. ** "Mithraism is a Roman mystery religion that flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Much is still unknown about this secretive sect, but scholars have generally been able to determine that it involved the worship of the ancient Persian god Mithras in caves, a communal meal and initiation through seven stages of an astrologically-themed hierarchy...Mithraism is frequently said to have been a great rival to early Christianity...Whether or not they were rivals, it is certainly possible that these two contemporary communities had some influence on each other. In at least one area, it is clear that Christianity adopted an aspect of Mithraism - the celebration of the birth of Christ on December 25, a tradition that began in the 4th century."

‎L'Harmattan, 1999, 302 p., in-8 br., préface d'Olivier Roy, coll.

‎MITHRAS. The Fellow In The Cap.‎

‎227 p. Edges foxed. 215mm. Original full cloth binding. Original priced dust jacket. Loss at head and tail. The Mysteries of Mithras (also Mithraism) was a religion centered on the god Mithras. It became popular among the military in the Roman Empire, from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Information on the cult is based mainly on interpretations of the many surviving monuments and underground temples. The most characteristic of these are depictions of Mithras as being born from a rock, and as sacrificing a bull. His worshippers had a complex system of grades of initiation. Their underground temples, survive in somewhat large numbers. Hardbound. Very good. RELIGION BX 10‎
