The text is evenly toned. The last two titles show some heavy damping. This is a bound volume of 4 separate 18th century Quaker titles all published in London. The first title by John Fry has no publication date and notes that it was printed for and sold by the author. This was published about 1762. Page 1 of this title has the signature of "John Elliott Philadelphia 1765." The last two pages of this title lists the Clerks of the Yearly Meeting from 1682 to 1762. The verso of page127 a blank page is filled with manuscript notations listing the Clerks for the years 1763 to 1804 other notations are also given. ~~ Solomon's Recantation is dated1739. ~~ A Mite Into the Treasury is dated 1756. ~~ The Epistle to the Inhabitants of South-Carolina by Sophia Hume is dated 1754. Hume was a native of South Carolina who moved to England. A scarce and early collection of titles. pp. (2), xlv, (6), 381, (3) [Publisher's Advertisements]. Foxed. Small 8vo. 19mm. Leather boards tooled in blind; later library cloth spine. Released duplicate from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania's Gilpin Library. Greatly expanded from the first edition. Some copies of the 3rd edition contain a frontis, but it apparently was not issued with the second. Charles Leslie was a celebrated non-juring divine. He distinguished himself in public religious controversy. When Ireland became disturbed in 1689, Leslie removed with his family to England, where he employed himself in writing political pamphlets (opposed to the existing government but zealous in support of the Church of England). About this time he entered into a controversy with the Quakers, said to have arisen from the circumstance of his lodging with a family of that persuasion. This family he converted. This is the first of the several treatises which he wrote against the Quakers. It was answered by George Whithead in a pamphlet entitled, "An Antidote to the Snake in the Grass." In this important Second Edition Mr. Leslie noticed this answer; but he was again assailed in a production called, 'Satan Dissolved from his Disguises of Light' which also appeared in 1696. To this, and several other attacks, Mr Leslie replied at great length in "A Defence of a book entitled the Snake in the Grass." This again provoked a host of answers, amongst which was one by the Quakers, entitled "A Switch for the Snake." Enoch Lewis 1776-1856 was a Pennsylvania Quaker and a mathematician who edited several mathematical works and published several textbooks including one on spherical projections. He was an abolitionist establishing the monthly journal African Observer and taking an active role in the Underground Railroad in Chester County Pa. In this pamphlet he examines another issue of concern to the Society of Friends that of legal and judicial oaths which Friends refused to take. Very scarce.
