Mentre la più sofisticata tecnologia bellica occidentale rovesciava fuoco e morte su Bassora e Bagdad, da certe case e villaggi si udiva levarsi un'invocazione antica: "Aiuto, Hibil Ziua!". Erano case e villaggi abitati dai mandei, gli appartenenti all'unica religione che, divenuta religione di popolo, sia sopravvissuta sino ai nostri giorni emergendo dal complesso magma dello gnosticismo tardoantico. Soffocata da tredici secoli di dominazione islamica, la religione mandaica si presenta oggi con il fascino di una sapienza antica e le contraddizioni di una visione arcaica del mondo. Questo libro si rivolge a lettori anche non specialisti, come introduzione al mondo mandaico tradizionale, alla sua storia spesso tormentata, ai suoi riti, alle sue leggende, ai suoi miti. Parte integrante del volume è un'estesa antologia di testi mandaici in traduzione italiana annotata, che consente un primo contatto con i nuclei più significativi di una produzione letteraria quanto mai ampia e particolare. Una formazione tesa a fecondare l'anima, in colui che risuona identica armonia interiore, e determinare quella vibrazione atta a mutare il percepito di quanto è reale e di quanto è illusorio, e di tradurlo in nuova linfa vitale.
