Spencer Trimingham 1952 in die Lage versetzten mit seinem Islam in Ethiopia ein zusammenfassendes Werk zu schaffen, das der heutigen und zukünftigen Forschung als solide Ausgangsbasis dienen kann. Um - speziell auf historischem Gebiet - erheblich über das von Trimingham gebotene hinauszukommen, bedarf es in erster Linie der Erschließung neuer Quellen. Eine solche Quelle, der Fath madinat Harar von Yahya Nasrallah, soll in dieser Arbeit vorgelegt werden, und es soll dabei gleichzeitig der Versuch gemacht werden, diese Quelle für die historische Forschung auszuwerten. Daß letzteres ein sehr riskantes und vielleicht sogar ergebnisloses Unternehmen ist, wird der Leser schnell gewahr werden, wenn er sich durch die Lektüre des folgenden Kapitels etwas mit dem Charakter dieser Quelle vertraut gemacht hat.1 Bei der Knappheit des Materials, das wir zur Geschichte des Islams in Äthiopien besitzen, schien es mir aber doch richtig, auch zweifelhafte Quellen auszunutzen und die Bedenken gegen eine Veröffentlichung zurückzustellen. In diesem Falle hielt ich es jedoch nicht für tunlich, den Text der Öffentlichkeit ohne Interpretation zu übergeben. Wenn der Text auch für sich genommen schon interessant ist als Zeugnis für die Geschichtsschreibung in einer von der übrigen islamischen Ökumene weitgehend abgeschnittenen, unter dem Druck einer christlichen Fremdherrschaft stehenden muslimischen Gemeinde, so ist der Hauptantrieb für seine Veröffentlichung jedoch der Wunsch, neue historische Fakten zu ermitteln und diese in den bisherigen Kenntnisstand einzubauen. Deshalb möchte ich diesen Versuch wagen, auch wenn mancher Fachgenosse vielleicht der Ansicht ist, dass ein solches Dokument die Mühe nicht wert sei, da man aus ihm keine sicheren Schlüsse ziehen könne. Selbstverständlich bin ich mir bewußt, daß alle meine Deduktionen im höchsten Grade hypothetisch sind, und daß sie durch neues Material, aber vielleicht auch schon durch andere Interpretation des vorhandenen Materials umgestoßen werden können. Aber schon wenn sie andere dazu anregen, sie umzustoßen und durch sicherere zu ersetzen, sind sie vielleicht nicht umsonst gewesen. - Ewald Wagner (* 8. August 1927 in Hamburg) ist ein deutscher Orientalist. Nach dem Studium an der Universität Hamburg (Promotion 1953) und einer Zwischenstation in Göttingen besuchte er die Bibliothekarschule in Köln. Anschließend arbeitete Wagner zehn Jahre lang als Bibliothekar in Mainz, wo er auch habilitiert wurde. 1964 folgte er einem Ruf als Professor an die Universität Gießen. Dort leitete er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1993 das Institut für Orientalistik.
