The post-modern Abyss and the new politics of Islam: Assabiyah revisited. Essays in honor of Serif Mardin.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 172 p. "We are here taking Turkey as our venue to discuss the rise of Islamic persuasion of more recent times. Turkish case is no Taliban or Afghanistan, no Pakistan or Yemen. Turkish case we think represents what is today new in the Islamic world more than the aforementioned examples. What is remarkable in the Turkish case is that the rise of Islamic practice has come on the heels of a century of secularization which only had accelerated in the last half of that hundred years.". Islam speaks of two languages today in Turkey: a "language of dispossesed" and a "language of (a)possessing". Serif Mardin, as a prominent sociologist with his work "Center-Periphery Relations: A Key to Turkish Politics?" well anticipated and clarified this new Islamic politics. Birtek and Toprak aim to celebrate several aspects of Mardin's work with articles that advert this new Islamic era through a view of history and policy. ISLAM Philosophy Modern Turkey Turkish Republic Turkish intelligent Intelligentsia.

The glorious Quran. Al-Mushaf al-Sharif attributed to 'Ali b. Abi Talib (The copy of Sana'a).
New English Original bdg. Small 4to. 184, 564, 216 p. A heavy volume. Ills. In Arabic. This is a facsimile edition of the copy (Mushaf) of the Holy Quran which is attributed to the time of Ali b. Abi Talib and located in Sana'a, Yemen. It comes out as a third publication in IRCICA's series of editions of oldest copies of the Quran. Earlier IRCICA had published editions, accompanied by descriptive and comparative studies, of two Quran copies that are attributed to the time of Othman b. Affan namely the copies of Topkapi, Istanbul and al-Mashhad al-Husayni, Cairo. The other copies attributed to the same period are in the following cities: Istanbul (the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, edition published by ISAM, Istanbul, 2008); London; Paris; St. Petersburg, and Tashkent. There are other editions of Quran copies that IRCICA published outside this series. One of them is the copy dated 582 H/1186 and known as the Fazil Pasha (Sherifovic) Mushaf, which is located in Gazi Husrevbegova Library, Sarajevo. Another edition, supervised by IRCICA, is the reprint of the Mushaf of Kazan dated 1803 which is known to be the first copy printed in the Muslim world; it was reprinted in cooperation with Kazan Municipality in the year 2005 corresponding to the millennium of Kazan city. By publishing these editions, with studies in the case of the former ones, IRCICA aims to contribute in preserving them and making them known and accessible to all. The Sana'a copy is located at the Grand Mosque of Sana'a. The elaborate Introduction to the edition is a study by Dr. Tayyar Altikulaç, specialist of the history of copies of the Quran and ex-Head of Religious Affairs in Turkey. The study is a concise history of the dissemination of the Holy Quran through its copies and of the developments relating to script, orthography, punctuation, locations, etc. of the copies. It examines, describes and analyses the characteristics of the Sana'a copy as to script, orthography, binding, etc. It also describes the other copies attributed to the period of Othman b. Affan as well as the copy printed by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran, Medina, which is known to be in conformity with the orthography of the time of Othman b. Affan. IRCICA planned to publish this edition during the 2010-2011 period which, at the suggestion of IRCICA, was designated by the 2010 meeting of the OIC's Council of Foreign Ministers as the "1400th Year of the Revelation of the Holy Quran". The Council had invited all OIC member countries and Muslims' associations and institutions world-wide to commemorate this anniversary of the beginning of the revelation with cultural and scholarly activities that would contribute in diffusing a correct and deeper understanding of the Holy Quran. IRCICA for its part is honoured to have been able to record this publication among its activities related to the said Year.

Nation-building: A key concept for peaceful conflict transformation?
Very Good English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. [xix], 202 p. Some sentences underlined. Nation-building: A key concept for peaceful conflict transformation? The term 'nation-building' has experienced a remarkable renaissance since the early 1990s. It has been used to describe and to justify the military interventions in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Linked to the idea of 'failed' or 'failing' states, the concept is used to hide and legitimise a whole range of diverse policies, allowing foreign powers to control and reshape countries in areas of conflict. Currently the international debate on nation building is heavily dominated by US actors and authors, especially by writers connected to the Bush administration or its policies. This book presents academic and political alternatives, presenting a critical view from 'Old Europe'. The book combines academic research and analysis with policy orientation, with contributors from both fields. It clarifies the terminology distinguishing developmental, peace-related, imperial and analytical approaches to nation-building. Highlighting its connections to globalization, democracy, ethnic and religious minorities, the contributors consider case studies such as Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Nigeria.

Congress of Education in the Islamic countries.= Du Congres sur l'Education dans les pays Islamiques.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English, French, and Arabic. 544 p. Among the 57 Islamic countries, there are the ones that can compete with the most developed countries of the world in many fields as well as the ones that can not display any development mark. Today we have to know closely the educational institutions and processes in these countries from preschool period to post - university education. It is known that the difference among these countries is based on the importance given to the education. At this point, our duty is to bring up 0generations who have strategic vision and who use existing resources in a most practical way, through education. In this context, Turkey is fulfiling one more duty with the mediation of NGOs and under the lead of two institutions, TASAM and ISAV, making contributions to progress of Islamic countries and to discussing new policies.

Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul kusatmalari.
New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 460 p., ills. Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul kusatmalari. Istanbul Research Institute presents a collection of papers in its new book. Although it does not discuss each siege that the city has encountered throughout its history of nearly two millennia, Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul Kusatmalari presents a full view -panopticon- of the ones that sources bring to the forefront. It is a collection of works selected from current literature that takes into consideration the diversity of ancient sources, epigraphical documents, and numismatic finds which have gained more prominence in Ancient and Medieval studies. The book contains research essays written in Turkish and English which not only focus on the forces that have besieged Istanbul (ever since its foundation, the city has been sieged first by its closest neighbors, the Thracians, and later the Hellenes, the Macedonians, Hellenistic kingdoms, the Romans, the Avars, the Sassanids, the Arabs, the Bulgars, the Rus, the Crusaders, and the Ottomans), but also draw attention to political rivalries, sieges triggered by conflicts that resulted in civil wars, and the capital's defense elements.

Teaching for tolerance in Muslim majority societies.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 284 p. The present book is based on a workshop held in Istanbul in November 2005 under the title "Learning about the other and teaching for tolerance in Muslim majority societies". It conveys critical analyses and innovative visions for tolerance education in school, focusing particularly on the role that religious and ethical education, social studies and history teaching can play in fostering tolerance and promoting inclusive notions of citizenship. In the book, one will find examples of how scholars and educators from Muslim majority countries (joined by two Western European scholars) see the special challenges that these societies face when trying to rethink the way in which religion, history and civics are taught in school. The chapters focus particularly on challenges and recent developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Lebanon, Nigeria, Palestine and Turkey. Recep Kaymakcan is Associate Professor of Religious Education at the University of Sakarya, Turkey. Oddbjørn Leirvik is Professor of Interreligious Studies at the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo, Norway.

Within the framework of the Council of Europe's project titled "The Image of the Other in History Teaching", the symposium on "Globalisation and Images of the Other: challenges and new perspectives for History teaching in Europe" was organised by the Council of Europe and IRCICA on 30 November - 1st December 2008 at Yildiz Palace, Istanbul. Angels, prophets and saints in Islamic and Christian art.= Islam ve Hiristiyan sanatinda melekler, peygamberler ve azizler.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 233 p., numerous b/w plates. Angels, prophets and saints in Islamic and Christian art.= Islam ve Hiristiyan sanatinda melekler, peygamberler ve azizler. Art History has been through a methodological transformation process by which it is becoming even more interdisciplinary, there is a significant need to be critical and the art historians have to find new perspectives on or new ways to conduct their researches, by looking beyond their areas of expertise to different approaches and other disciplines. This concern could and even should be reflected on a more general responsibility of art historians and historians in general. At this point, let me refer to the White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue of the Council of Europe, launched at the 118th ministerial session (Strasbourg, 7 May 2008): ?History teaching is instrumental in overcoming the wounds of the past and in promoting the fundamental values to which the Council of Europe is particularly committed; it is a decisive factor in reconciliation, recognition, understanding and mutual trust between peoples?. Historians in general, but also history of art scholars, must shoulder their responsibility on the elimination of prejudices and stereotypes among different countries, cultures and religions. One way to do is to highlight the positive mutual influences during the long history of Europe, while becoming critical at the very least to their own studies against possible ignorance and any misuse of history for ideological aims. In view of these, the colloquium and this book aim to represent a pioneer study in the field of art history in Turkey.
