Au fil des siècles, les stratégies des penseurs chrétiens ou des missionnaires européens évoluent, à mesure que l'islam est mieux connu, pour affiner la charge et les arguments théologiques. Mais la guerre idéologique demeure un enjeu fondamental, si marquant qu'il sous-tend nos propres représentations aujourd'hui : le sentiment de supériorité des Occidentaux à l'égard des musulmans et des Arabes n'est pas né avec la colonisation, il plonge ses racines au Moyen Âge
