One restored tear to foot of verso slightly touching the right hand side of the title cartouche. This map, very detailed and with a key in French, shows a good part of North America and in particular the Mississippi river and Great Lakes. At bottom left, there is a scale showing «hours by horse» between different points as well as latitudes and longitudes. A fine copy of this map calling to mind John Law and the Mississippi Bubble. «The cartouche of this map by Matthaeus Seutter (1678-1757) is particularly well crafted. It depicts, in an allegorical way, the sadly famous speculative bubble of the Mississippi Company in 1719. The resources within easy reach that could be exploited in Louisiana had been vastly overvalued and the shareholders swindled and eventually ruined by the campaign of lies orchestrated by the Scottish economist John Law. In the cartouche, Fortuna, the goddess of chance, pours out jewels and other treasures, but she is perched on a bubble, a symbol of precariousness. Beneath, cherubs produce shares in the company with the aid of a printing press while others blow soap bubbles, surrounded by worthless share certificates. Around the pedestal, investors despair, some throwing themselves from a tree, another falling onto his sword, and yet another tearing his hair. Over their heads, an angel holds an empty money-bag. Seutter uses the decoration as a caricature or satire. This allows him to express his sarcastic view on a current topic in one part of the territory he is mapping. The job of mapmakers is often influenced by geopolitics, especially when it comes to tracing borders or the attribution of newly discovered land to one nation rather than another. Très bel exemplaire de cette carte évoquant John Law et l'affaire de la bulle du Mississippi. « Le cartouche de cette carte de Matthaeus Seutter (1678-1757) est particulièrement soigné. Il dépeint de manière allégorique la tristement célèbre bulle spéculative de la Compagnie du Mississippi de 1719. Les ressources à même d'exploiter les richesses de la Louisiane avaient été largement surévaluées et les actionnaires floués puis ruinés par la publicité mensongère orchestrée par l'économiste écossais John Law. Sur le cartouche, Fortuna, déesse de la chance, verse des joyaux et autres richesses mais elle est perchée sur une bulle, symbole de la précarité. Very Good Turkish First and Only Edition of this scarce travel book of America in the 20th century, by the founder of Turkish "Life" magazine and Tifdruk Publishing House in the Republic of Turkey. Sevket Rado was a Turkish journalist, author, and the founder of "Hayat" magazine. "Hayat" means "Life", and it was a long-running periodical in Turkey, which was published in the same format of the "Life" magazine, just like its counterpart in America. "Life" was an American magazine published weekly from 1883 to 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and monthly from 1978 until 2000. During its golden age from 1936 to 1972, "Life" was a weekly magazine known for the high quality of its photography. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese with occasional Chinese characters is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter Liu Li Chang Curio District the racecourse the many city gates etc. . In 1909 The Heart of The Antarctic was produced as a Deluxe Special Vellum Binding Issue and limited to 300 copies. The edition contained 2 sheets of signatures 1 from the British participants 14 men of the shore party and 1 from the Australian participants of the shore party 2 men. The sheets would have been signed prior to binding with some spares in case of accidents. This is one of the spares a single unbound sheet of signatures of the British participants of the shore party there is a crease where the sheet has been folded at some time. The signatures are all original. The signatures are of Shackleton Priestley Wild Joyce Day Marston Murray Brocklehurst Adams MacKay ArmytageMarshall Mackintosh & Roberts. The watermarks on the unbound sheet are similar to those found in the bound copy of The Antarctic Book. The watermark on the page of signatures shows part of SCRIVIA FINE and shield with a capital letter T. Shackleton first gained fame as a member of Scotts 1901 expedition then in August 1907 he left London as commander of his own expedition popularly known as the "Nimrod" Expedition and renowned "for having reached within 97 miles of the South Pole almost four years before Amundsen and Scott achieved the Pole itself This expedition established Shackleton as a bona-fide English hero" having discovered the Polar Plateau and accomplishing the first attainment of the Magnetic South Pole as well as the first ascent of Mt. Erebus fully outdistancing his predecessors to a degree unequalled in the history of polar exploration. The plates include: Knesset Menorah, Mount Zion at Sundown, Minaret, Capernaum, spirit of Maimonides, Wailing wall, Bahai Shrine, etc, and two of Toronto synagogues (McCaul Street and University Ave. synagogues). Included with this copy is an additional loose plate of 'The Three Symbols on Mount Zion', which is signed by artist in ink at bottom.
