First edition. - An informative account of diplomatic travel describing a journey by the Ottoman ambassador, Sirvanli, to India, illustrated by lithographic reproductions of pen-and-ink drawings. Rich in detail, they show Hindu temples, ports and city views, while the folding table of script specimens shows the alphabets of Sanskrit, Brahmi and Devangari and their pronunciations in Latin and Arabic alphabets. The travelogue begins with the journey from Istanbul to India by ferry, and goes on to describe Indian cities including Bombay, Poona, Jaipur, Calcutta, Delhi, Lahore, Ceylon, and Madras, as well as Kashmir, Afghanistan, and Kabul, and gives an account of Mecca, which the diplomat visited on his way home. Reflecting on the cities' names and origins as well as on peoples' customs and traditions, the book also mentions a meeting with Sayyid Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University, one of the first institutions of higher education in British India. - Extremities lightly bumped, paper evenly browned throughout. Parts of the book were published in Geographic Magazine in a different form. This edition is in larger format than previous edition, making it easier to read.‎

Smet's father also produced a translation in an edition published in Ghent, also in 1848. Two-tone lithographed frontispiece and frontispiece-title on China paper. 12 two-tone lithographic plates on thick paper showing the lives of Native Americans. Half dark brown sheep. Spine with mock-bands with three Romantic blindtools and gilt roulettes. Upper joint cracked at head and foot and rubbed. Leather tail-piece worn away, revealing cardboard. Leaves 251 and 253 detached. Scattered spotting. Covers and edges rubbed. The work is the account of a journey by Smet, a missionary Jesuit priest, along the Colombia river, which runs from Canada to the United States. Smet undertook this voyage to the Athabasca river, arriving at Fort Augusta on the 1st January 1846. On another trip, he went back to Fort Vancouver. He finally left again in July and stopped at the mission of Saint Marie before travelling down the Missouri. The work contains a deal of information on the area of Oregon and on Native Americans, including their costumes, habits, and beliefs. NB : This work can be viewed at the bookshop with 48 hours' advance notice. [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale de la traduction française par Bourlez. Le père de Smet avait lui même donné sa propre traduction dans une édition publiée à Gand, également en 1848. Un frontispice et un titre-frontispice lithographiés sur chine et imprimés en 2 tons. 12 planches lithographiées en 2 tons sur papier fort représentant la vie des indiens. Reliure en demi basane glacée chocolat. Dos à faux nerfs orné de 3 fers romantiques à froid, de roulettes dorées. Mors supérieur fendu en tête et queue et frotté. Coiffe de queue au cuir élimée et laissant apparaître le carton. Feuillet 251 et 253 détachés. Rousseurs éparses. Plats et brodures frottés. L'ouvrage contient la narration du voyage du père missionnaire jésuite de Smet le long du fleuve Colombia qui circule du Canada aux Etats-Unis. Ce dernier poursuit son voyage jusqu'à la rivière Athabasca, arrivant à Fort Augusta le 1er janvier 1846. Dans un autre voyage il retourne à Fort Vancouvert. Il repart enfin en juillet et s'arrête à la mission Saint Marie, puis descend le Missouri. On y trouve de nombreux renseignements sur le territoire de l'Orégon et sur les indiens, leurs coutumes, leurs moeurs et leurs croyances.
