‎Eine Deutschland-Reise im Jahr 1901. Da bricht man munter mit einem Ziel im Sinn auf und kommt woanders an. Heißt der Reisende aber Franzos, ist immerhin sicher, daß er es aufschreiben wird. Es stellt sich also heraus, daß er nach Anhalt und Thüringen fährt. Dort geht er zuweilen in die Irre, da er nicht weiß, »was doch hier Ein Jeder weiß« (so die Einheimischen). Mit urbaner Nüchternheit sagt sich der Schriftsteller, es müsse mangelnder Geschäftssinn sein, der sich in dieser unterentwickelten Empathie für die Nöte des Touristen niederschlägt. Und wie nicht anders zu erwarten, findet er trotzdem genug Interessantes. Einem so kundigen und höflichen Schriftsteller kann man nicht nachweisen, daß seine Reise ihn in die Provinz geführt haben könnte. Karl Emil Franzos (geboren am 25. Oktober 1848 in Czortków in der heutigen Ukraine, gestorben am 28. Januar 1904 in Berlin) war ein bedeutender Chronist ostjüdischen Lebens; aber auch vom Westen kann er spannend erzählen: Aus Anhalt und Thüringen bildet den ersten Teil der Deutschen Fahrten, die mit dem bereits erschienenen Elsaß-Reisebericht "Aus den Vogesen" fortgesetzt wurden.‎
