‎FREYCINET VOYAGE ARAGO Jacques‎

‎Timor: during the expedition of the Uranie 1818. Fine watercolour the image 198 x 265 mm. on laid paper; pencil note "Mr. Arago" in Freycinet's later hand at bottom left; mounted. Fine scene in Timor drawn by Jacques Arago during the visit of the Freycinet expedition in late 1818. Arago's observations on Timor were acute and he is known to have toured and made sketches in both the wealthy Chinese and Malay quarters. A series of his Timor scenes was later included in the official Freycinet voyage account but this scene was not made into an engraving and is in fact otherwise unrecorded. Jacques Etienne Arago 1790-1855 was the official artist on Freycinet's voyage and is known for the witty and caustic account he later wrote as much as for his fine sketches. As with many other Arago drawings relating to the voyage this was evidently subsequently owned by Freycinet and it is his handwriting that signs the picture "Mr. Arago" at bottom left. Arago was the third of four brothers who excelled in diverse professions the most notable being his eldest brother François a scientist and politician. Arago's undoubted artistic ability attracted the attention of the naval authorities who chose him for the demanding role of draughtsman for the Freycinet expedition. By all accounts a charming gregarious and eccentric man these attributes stood him in good stead during the voyage and are reflected in the sketches he made. Freycinet is known to have retained a large number of voyage images by both Arago and his colleague Pellion which would have been surrendered to him as both commander and official chronicler of the voyage. It is interesting to note that Arago's famous scene of Rose going ashore at Timor sold by us in our Baudin & Flinders catalogue 2010 no. 69 has almost identical borders and annotations as did his sketch of a man of Timor no. 81. Quarto two parts in one with a folding map and 25 lithograph plates contemporary smooth calf gilt The first edition in English of this informal narrative of the Uranie voyage the great French expedition to Australia and the Pacific commanded by Louis de Freycinet; it is also the first appearance in English of any account of the expedition. Arago was the official artist on the voyage and the lithograph plates here are all after his own drawings. His narrative is highly readable not least because he entirely avoids the conventional forms of the voyage narrative ignoring the 'eternal repetition of winds currents longitude and lattitude'. There is a long account almost 100 pages of their stay in Hawaii at a crucial period in the history of the islands. Long portions relate to Australia with descriptions of Sydney the Blue Mountains and of meetings with Governor Macquarie and John Oxley. Full of wry humour the book takes the form of a series of letters to a friend and it has been suggested that the letters may originally have been written to Arago's brother François the famous scientist. Certainly it is the intimacy of their personal and anecdotal tone that makes them not only so enjoyable to read today but such a fascinating source of the more minute details of life especially in New South Wales and Hawaii. The illustrations match the text in tone: these are not the formal depictions that characterise the beautiful atlases of the full official account of the voyage but much more informal always charming and in some cases quite eccentric. Despite the clear evidence of the 'Directions for placing the Plates' present here there has been some unnecessary confusion about the collation of this book. Ferguson omitted the map from his plate count while Hill erroneously called for a map and 26 plates. This copy with the map and 25 plates is complete. Treuttel and Wurtz unknown‎

Five volumes octavo with a portrait and 59 hand-coloured lithographic plates a few folding in the first four volumes and 15 uncoloured plates in the fifth volume; handsome contemporary French quarter olive-green calf spines with raised bands ornamented and lettered in gilt. Classic account of the Freycinet voyage around the world of 1817 to 1820: this is the rare and desirable edition in which the sixty lithographs appear in handsome original colouring. Although one of the most frequently published of all nineteenth-century voyage accounts this third edition is the only version in which the plates appear as this superb suite of coloured lithographs and should be ranked as one of the rarest and most prized Pacific colour-plate books concentrating on Hawaii and Micronesia as well as Western Australia and New South Wales. This set also includes the scarce fifth supplementary volume devoted to hunting. This last volume entitled Chasses - Drame is a selection of further reminiscences that had not appeared in other versions. Complete with 15 uncoloured plates the fifth volume shares the format and design of the first four volumes yet bears a different publisher's imprint H.-L. Delloye. It contains descriptions of hunting experiences during the voyage including a 14-page description of a kangaroo hunt in New South Wales. The scarcity of this volume is reflected by the fact it was not described by either of the careful bibliographers Ferguson on Australia or Forbes on Hawaii. Arago was one of four famous brothers three of whom were respected authors and artists the fourth was a general. He sailed as artist on Louis de Freycinet's 1817 voyage around the world on the Uranie and on his return devoted the rest of his life to writing about the voyage and writing for the theatre. His account of the voyage is very different to the huge official narrative giving a highly readable and very personal whimsical and humorous description of events and people. As he noted in the English version Narrative of a Voyage 1823 he set out to avoid the conventional forms of the voyage narrative and to ignore the 'eternal repetition of winds currents longitude and lattitude'. By the time this version of his book reached the public its remarkable author and artist had lost his sight: hence the new title used for the work of Souvenirs d'un aveugle. In his moving opening note Arago observes that 'n'avoir rien vu c'est n'avoir rien à regretter. On ne perd réellement qu'après avoir possédé. et j'ai tant perdu!'. The lovely handcolouring in this edition means that Arago's wonderful depictions of the Pacific are given full rein. Volume III is almost entirely devoted to Hawaii pp. 97-325 with portraits of Young and Queen Kanoé alongside many other scenes: the elaborate and colourful headgear and dress of the Hawaiian warriors is especially beautiful. Of special interest is the large section of the book devoted to Australia pp. 23-163 with no less than five plates depicting Aborigines of New Holland. These include evocative depictions after Péron artist for the official Freycinet voyage account as well as Arago's own images of for instance a duel in New South Wales a fierce Maori warrior bailed up by a dandy with two flint-lock pistols and an Aboriginal man climbing a tree - to the amazement of a European in candy-stripe pants. Ferguson listed only the Mitchell Library copy and did not note the additional "Chasses-Drame" volume; Forbes gives a fuller census but could still only list three more copies.
