Der österreichisch-ungarische Afrikaforscher Emil Holub (1847-1902) ging 1872 mittellos nach Südafrika und ließ sich in Dutoitspan als Arzt nieder mit der Absicht, sich durch Ausübung seines Berufs die Mittel für eine größere Expedition nach dem Innern des Kontinents zu verschaffen. Er unternahm schließlich von 1873-87 mehrere Afrikaexpeditionen. 1883 versuchte er mit seiner Frau Rosa eine meridionale Durchquerung Afrikas. Im September 1887 kehrte er mit der größten Sammlung, die jemals aus Afrika gebracht wurde, nach Europa zurück. (vgl. dazu ÖBL II, 406, Henze II, 615 u. Dt.
