[ 1902 ], IV-308 pp. avec une carte dépliante‎ ‎En juillet 1895, l'officier et explorateur Emile Gentil (1866-1914) remonte le fleuve Congoà bord du vapeur "Léon Blot", afin de trouver la voie la plus aisée entre le Gabon et le Tchad. Il signe en octobre, avec le sultan Gaourang, un traité confiant à la France le protectorat sur le Baghirmi et la lutte contre le seigneur soudanais Rabah (Rabih Zuhair). Rabah sera tué en 1900 à la bataille de Kousséri (le commandant Lamy sera également tué durant l'assaut). L'auteur (qui donnera son nom à "Port-Gentil" et dont les violences seront reprochées) dénonce ici les violences et l'esclavagisme de Rabah, mais reconnait sa bravoure et ses talents d'organisateur du territoire tchadien.
