Michael Lambert opens three windows on to this history, using the creation of identities as his theoretical lens. The foundation of the Classical Association of South Africa in 1956 and the cultural reinforcement of Afrikaner nationalist identity; the deployment of British colonial identity in public discourses about the role of the Classics in apartheid South Africa at an English speaking university; and the exploration of black African identities in response to the teaching of the Classics at missionary institutions, where vocational training was locked in combat with a classical education, regarded by an educated black elite as the means for upward social mobility in a highly-stratified colonial society.‎

‎Edition originale dans sa reliure de l'époque (Gay 253 - Monglond I, 230). Ouvrage orné de deux bandeaux gravés, de 4 planches gravées hors-texte : Une grande carte repliée, représentant un plan de l'ile Saint-Louis, une vue du fort St-Louis, une carte des environs de l'ile Saint-Louis et une carte du Sénégal, ici en reproduction sur papier ancien. "En 1779 le Duc de Lauzun reprend Saint-Louis sur les Anglais. En 1783 le Sénégal est de nouveau confié à une compagnie : La Compagnie du Sénégal. Cette compagnie privilégiée a le monopole exclusif du commerce. Les habitants ne l’entendent pas ainsi. Ils veulent rester les intermédiaires entre la compagnie et les populations de l’intérieur. La compagnie, de son côté, veut exploiter son privilège exclusif et cherche, par tous les moyens, à éloigner les habitants des escales. En 1784 les habitants envoient une pétition au ministre de la marine, le Maréchal de Castries. Ils s’élèvent contre le privilège de la compagnie et dénoncent les nombreux inconvénients du privilège exclusif. Le prix de la gomme, étant en effet fixe, les Maures auront tendance à produire moins de gommes et ainsi la colonie aura peu de ressources. Les habitants sont favorables au libre commerce qu’ils réclament de leurs vœux. La pétition n’eut pas beaucoup d’effet mais les habitants furent assez heureux pour contourner les entraves posées par la compagnie. Ils purent néanmoins participer au commerce et en tirer le maximum de profit. Mais en janvier 1789 le privilège de la compagnie devient totalement exclusif et fut étendu à tous les produits du commerce. Les habitants en souffrent énormément. Comme Louis XVI, le 24 janvier 1789, convoquait les Etats Généraux pour le mois de mai, les habitants réunis à Saint-Louis le 15 avril 1789, sous la présidence de Charles Cornier, maire, décident d’envoyer des cahiers de doléances au Roi. Les cahiers mettent surtout en cause le privilège de la compagnie. Les habitants se disent « courbés sous le joug insupportable, du despotisme affreux d’une compagnie privilégiée ». Ils prônent la liberté du commerce. Ils disent en effet : « Les conséquences sont toutes différentes quand le commerce est libre. Le grand nombre de navires qui viennent traiter dans la rivière du Sénégal offrent un appas suffisant et même un intérêt réel aux Maures pour les détourner de porter leur gomme à Portendick où ils ne peuvent aller qu’à travers mille peines et mille dangers ». Les habitants seront les principales victimes de la compagnie. En effet, disent-ils : « Toutes ces circonstances ne peuvent qu’influer beaucoup sur les habitants de l’île Saint-Louis, qui sont les agents nécessaires (sic) de toutes les opérations du commerce, soit comme interprètes, soit comme courtiers ou traiteurs. Les habitants pilotent les vaisseaux et traitent ; les esclaves manœuvrent ou traînent à bras ces mêmes navires, parce que les équipages blancs sont insuffisants et qu’ils ne pourraient pas résister à un travail aussi dur dans un climat de feu » (INED II, p. 350)". "La question que l’on se pose à propos de ces cahiers, c’est bien leur caractère d’authenticité. Est-ce que les habitants de Saint-Louis se sont réellement réunis en 1789 pour rédiger leurs « très humbles doléances et remontrances aux citoyens français tenant les Etats Généraux » ou bien s’agit-il de l’initiative privée de Lamiral qui s’est présenté aux Etats Généraux sous le titre usurpé de député du Sénégal ? Ce qu’il faut retenir c’est que ces cahiers ne se retrouvent que dans le livre de Lamiral publié en 1789 sous le titre de : « L’Afrique et le peuple afriquain ». En effet, nulle part ailleurs, mention n’en est faite. On n’en retrouve pas trace en effet dans le C 6, ensemble des archives des administrations de Gorée et des compagnies ayant fait du commerce sur la côte d’Afrique de 1763 à 1815. Il n’en est fait non plus mention dans les archives de la Restauration et de la Monarchie de juillet".‎

A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799, the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates, of which 72 colored, as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The 'Egyptian campaign', militarily a disaster, demonstrates, through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte, the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte [Egyptian Institute] who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge, the chemist Berthollet, the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists, engineers, architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition, the so-called "Imperial" edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats, two of which were specially created for it and christened "Moyen-Egypte" and "Grand-Egypte". A special press was built to print it, the process extending over 20 years, from 1809 to 1829. The "Imperial" edition proved so popular that a second edition, this time in black and white and without the "Egypte ancienne et moderne" watermark - known as the "Royal Edition" - was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke (Paris). The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon, illustrator, diplomat, collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon (the Louvre). His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there, thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte. Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51, reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte, the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté (brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, author of Roses), the mineralogist Dolomiue, and the draughtsman Joly, Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When, however, he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798, he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself, he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
