They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition, the so-called "Imperial" edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats, two of which were specially created for it and christened "Moyen-Egypte" and "Grand-Egypte". A special press was built to print it, the process extending over 20 years, from 1809 to 1829. The "Imperial" edition proved so popular that a second edition, this time in black and white and without the "Egypte ancienne et moderne" watermark - known as the "Royal Edition" - was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke (Paris). The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon, illustrator, diplomat, collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon (the Louvre). His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there, thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte. Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51, reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. ‎Très rare exemplaire de cette monographie. L'auteur expose ses intentions dans l'avant-propos : "Pendant de longues années, des hommes de races différentes que dirigeaient des officiers français, ont peiné, ont souffert, ont été mutilés ou sont morts pour que la puissance de leur patrie dominât, incontestée, sur les immenses et riches territoires dont l'ensemble constitue aujourd'hui l'Afrique Occidentale Française. La justification de tous ces sacrifices était apportée non seulement par les nécessités de l'expansion qui est une des formes inévitables de la vie des peuples, mais aussi par les besoins de l'industrie et du commerce de notre pays dont le logique développement réclamait des matières premières en abondance et des marchés nouveaux de vente. Or, ce résultat économique est loin d'avoir atteint son intensité pour tout notre domaine colonial, et surtout pour notre Ouest-Africain. La cause ? Elle a été dénoncée depuis longtemps par tous ceux qui voyaient avec peine la régression paradoxale de la France sur l'échelle de la production et des échanges, tandis que l'Allemagne progressait avec une rapidité vertigineuse dont le célèbre rapport de la Deutsche-Bank, de 1913, permit de voir que nous marchions, indifférents, vers la subordination économique. On qualifia de pessimistes ceux qui avaient la conscience de voir la vérité des faits et le courage de le crier à leurs compatriotes. Avaient-ils assez raison ? Depuis, cinq ans ont passé. Cinq ans de luttes, de morts, mais cinq ans de gloire pour notre France qui ne céda pas devant l'arbitraire agression de la force et ne s'arrêta dans son œuvre libératrice qu'avec la victoire totale du Droit sur le pangermanisme, formule d'oppression politique et économique. [ ...] Cette étude d'ailleurs, n'a d'autre but que de mettre en évidence un de ces cas, trop nombreux, auxquels on a appliqué le mot très juste de « malthusianisme économique », en montrant comment la plus belle partie peut-être de notre A.O.F. est condamnée à la stérilité faute de pouvoir exporter ses produits par la seule voie logique : la « route qui marche » du fleuve Sénégal. Pourquoi maintenir fermée son embouchure malgré l'avis des techniciens les plus autorisés ? Ce n'est pas une critique que je veux formuler, mais une cause utile à la France que j'entends plaider. Et c'est ce qui m'oblige, avant d'aborder le problème si pressant de la navigabilité du grand fleuve africain de Kayes à l'Océan [... ]". Ce projet est aujourd'hui repris par l'Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du fleuve Sénégal afin de redonner vie à la navigation commerciale entre le Mali et l'Océan en aménageant un chenal navigable et en construisant un port fluvial moderne à Kayes. ‎* Erste Ausgabe. Sehr selten ! --- Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Mader (* 1. September 1866 in Nizza; ? 30. März 1945 in Bönnigheim) war ein deutscher evangelischer Pfarrer und Schriftsteller von Zukunfts- und Abenteuerromanen, Theaterstücken, Märchen, Gedichten und Liedern. Er wird der schwäbische Karl May genannt. Friedrich Wilhelm Mader wuchs im evangelischen Pfarrhaus der deutschsprachigen Gemeinde in Nizza auf, deren langjähriger Leiter sein Vater Philipp Friedrich Mader war. Mader war ein guter Schüler und beendete seine Schullaufbahn 1884 mit dem Abitur in Heilbronn. Danach studierte er evangelische Theologie an der Universität Tübingen und trat 1889 in den württembergischen Kirchendienst. Er war von 1890 bis 1894 Vikar an verschiedenen Orten, darunter in Nizza und von 1897 bis 1917 Pfarrer in Eschelbach und Kesselfeld in Hohenlohe. In den Jahren im Hohenlohischen begann er, Jugendbücher zu veröffentlichen (bis 1942), die vor allem in anderen Kontinenten spielen. Mader war nebenbei für verschiedene Zeitungen, u.a. für die Münchner Fliegenden Blätter, tätig. Seine eigentliche Berufung war die Schriftstellerei. Ab 1917 war er als freier Schriftsteller tätig. Mader war von christlich-evangelischen Lebensvorstellungen und Moral durchdrungen und deutschnational eingestellt. 1929 baute er in Stuttgart, in der Otto-Reiniger-Straße 65, ein eigenes Haus.
