La carta trae le informazioni cartografiche dalla grande mappa del continente di Giacomo Gastaldi, mentre le informazioni storiche sono traatte dafonti di Virgilio, Plinio, Appiano ed Elicarnaso. Opera tratta dal Parergon, il primo atlante storico mai pubblicato. Fu inizialmente concepito da Ortelius come appendice del suo Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ma visto il notevole successo di queste carte storiche divenne in seguito un lavoro indipendente e rimase la fonte principale di tutti i lavori simili per tutto il XVII secolo. Come sottolinea Koeman “il Parergon deve essere considerato come lavoro personale di Ortelius. Per quest'opera, infatti, diversamente dal Theatrum, non copiò le mappe di altri cartografi, ma ne disegnò lui stesso di nuove ed originali…prese luoghi, regioni e territori delle civiltà classiche illustrandone e spiegandone la storia, una materia molto vicina al suo cuore. Le mappe e le lastre del Parergon devono essere valutate come le più importanti incisioni che rappresentano il diffuso interesse per la geografia classica nel XVI secolo”. Il bellissimo cartiglio al centro mostra elementi egizi, mentre una grande battaglia navale e due mostri marini decorano questa importante mappa, tratta dall’edizione tedesca del Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Carta tratta dal Theatrum Orbis Terrarum e che è considerato il primo vero “atlante” moderno. This beautiful map is one of the cornerstone maps of Africa. Geographically, it is a close copy of Gastaldi’s map of 1564 and follows the Ptolemaic view of the Nile. Ortelius' map was modern in appearance, compared to Munster and others, and remained the standard map of Africa well into the 17th century. The map contains a superb vignette of a naval battle on bottom right, and various sea monsters. The cartouche bears Egyptian decorations. From a German edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Ortelius states that the inset of Hyperborei (the Pole) 'for better beautifying or proportioning of this map', and to remind the reader that in spite of the best efforts of modern explorers, a passage to the Far East via the North Pole has not yet been found by the English or the Dutch. Includes the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Cape Verdes.One of the most detailed and scientifically accurate maps of the region published at the beginning of the 18th Century.Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son and pupil of the cartographer Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier.This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. At the time the map was made, the coastal areas were ruled by the Dutch East Indian Company, who were undoubtedly responsible for the soundings indicated around the island and for mapping the roads depicted.
