The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired its first African objects in 1915, a year before its doors opened to the public, and organized its first African art exhibition as early as 1929. A department of primitive art, which included the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, was created in 1929 and existed until 1940. The museum was also one of the few venues to host a traveling version of the landmark exhibition African Negro Art, conceived by curator James Johnson Sweeney for the Museum of Modern Art in 1935 (fig. 1).The importance of this exhibition has been summarized by Suzanne Preston Blier, professor of African art history at Harvard University: "If today the vast majority of art historians and fine arts trained curators specializing in African art are American, it is in part because African art officially became 'art' to the wider museum-going public in the United States in 1935 on the occasion of the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition of African art." In 1915, a series of Kuba textiles and a group of Chokwe pieces entered the collection.These first African objects were acquired with funds allocated for education. Although this collection grouped different examples of the decorative or applied arts (in the strict Western sense of the term) and included no figure sculptures or masks, the artistic qualities of some of the Chokwe objects in particular are recognized today and similar pieces have been part of more than one exhibition of masterpieces (fig. 2 and pl. 34). Gli studi sui forti africani, queste costruzioni emble-matiche del colonialismo europeo, non sono molto numerosi. Non lo sono in Italia che ha avuto una partecipazione marginale, e comunque assolutamente tardiva, alla vicenda coloniale (quantunque banchieri e mercanti italiani, come i Medici e i Marchionni della Firenze rinascimentale, per esempio, siano stati associati alla corona portoghese nella prima fase dei traffici con l'Africa Nera); ma non sono frequenti neppure fuori d'Italia, in quei paesi: Portogallo, Olanda, Svezia, Danimarca, Francia e Inghilterra che hanno lascia-to queste corpose testimonianze dellq loro presenza sulle coste dell'Africa. Eppure l'iconografia sull'argomento è abbondante, sia sotto forma di disegni che di tavole incise, inserite nei volumi di resoconti di viaggi dati alle stampe a partire dalla fine del Cinquecento per soddisfare la sete di informazioni sulle terre di nuova scoperta. E, oltre che abbondante, l'iconografia sui forti è fedele, o comunque più fedele alla realtà di quanto non lo siano le rappresentazioni degli africani, fantastiche o mutuate dall'immaginario europeo, oscillanti tra il bisogno di illustrare uno stato selvaggio, consono alla invocata "missione civilizzatrice" dei bianchi, e la nostalgia di una perduta età dell'oro, arcaica e nobile, come ho cercato di suggerire in altra occasione. In molti casi le rappresentazioni dei forti non si limitano alla veduta panoramica, solitamente dal mare, talvolta generica e magari ripresa da opere precedenti, con il semplice cambio della bandiera della potenza occupante, ma sono corredate da piante, da alzati e da particolari architettonici, vere opere scientifiche che consentono di indovinare, integrando la visione con l'analisi del testo, le condizioni di vita più o meno spaventose ?
