Demi-chagrin brun, dos à nerfs orné, tranches dorées. Légère décoloration sur les plats, des rousseurs éparses.‎ ‎Première édition de la traduction française. John Speke avait découvert le lac Tanganika lors d'une expédition en 1858, ainsi qu'un grand lac (le lac Nyanza) qu'il baptise du nom de Victoria. Il repart en Afrique en 1860 pour tenter de confirmer sa découverte, accompagné du capitaine Augustus Grant, auteur des dessins qui illustrent le présent livre. En juillet 1862 ils atteignent enfin les chutes de Ripon où le Nil blanc sort du lac Victoria. Speke connait un grand succès à son retour à Londres, mais sa découverte est contestée.
