Sopravvissuta ai lager, partecipa alle commissioni di inchiesta sui crimini dello stalinismo. Solo a metà degli anni Cinquanta Germaine Tillion potrà tornare alla sua prima passione, a quegli studi etnografici in cui aveva avuto tra i suoi maestri Marcel Mauss e Louis Massignon che l'avevano condotta fin dal 1934 fra i berberi dell'Aurès, nel nord dell'Algeria. Nel 1966 pubblicherà questo libro sulle questioni dell'harem e dei rapporti di parentela nelle culture arabe del nord Africa. Sorretto dal continuo confronto con le tesi di Lévi-Strauss, il libro mette in particolare luce la condizione della donna, tocca la questione del velo, che tanto scalda il dibattito in Occidente, esamina le componenti religiose di queste culture che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo e rivelano insospettati legami culturali con l'Europa.
