Printed by Gauthier-Villars; listed on the half title verso and the last page with the code 45159. This was the first of the Voyages Extraordinaires by Jules Verne. In Good Condition: lacking lower third of cloth from spine; fraying along edges of the remainder with minor loss at head of spine; corners of boards are rubbed; cloth is somewhat soiled; pages are browning with occasional soiling and foxing; 5-cm. closed tear from fore-edge of pp. 67-68; otherwise pages and plates are clean and tight. A history of the Nile expedition of 1884-5 taken from author's diary sketch book Each sketch is accompanied by a description of the events leading up to that sketch. The illustrations are lovely. Internally this rare work is very clean and except for the original end paper free of foxing. The volume is complete with one colored sketch map and 37 colored lithographic plates. Although the covers and spine are good only the plates are in great shape. The original pictorial board binding shows wear especially at corners but the cover illustration is all present and clear. Produced between February 1802 and 1830 on the orders of Naopleon Bonaparte and published between 1809 and 1828, 1,000 copies were printed and distributed to institutions, on vergé paper with an 'Égypte ancienne et moderne' watermark, visible when held up to the light. Light marginal spotting not touching image, otherwise in very fresh, fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte, one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799, the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates, of which 72 colored, as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The 'Egyptian campaign', militarily a disaster, demonstrates, through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte, the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte [Egyptian Institute] who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge, the chemist Berthollet, the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists, engineers, architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition, the so-called "Imperial" edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats, two of which were specially created for it and christened "Moyen-Egypte" and "Grand-Egypte". A special press was built to print it, the process extending over 20 years, from 1809 to 1829. The "Imperial" edition proved so popular that a second edition, this time in black and white and without the "Egypte ancienne et moderne" watermark - known as the "Royal Edition" - was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke (Paris). The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon, illustrator, diplomat, collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon (the Louvre). His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there, thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte. Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51, reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte, the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté (brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, author of Roses), the mineralogist Dolomiue, and the draughtsman Joly, Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. Paris, Hachette 1890. Édition Originale Giraud forma son projet d'exploration du lac Bangouélo grâce à David Livingstone. Ce sont en effet les récits des voyages de Livingstone et sa mort dans les marais du lac Bangouéolo qui donnèrent envie à Giraud d'explorer les lacs de l'Afrique équatoriale. Il prévoyait d'arriver au terme de son expédition à la saison sèche après six mois de voyage. Il suivit la même route que Livingstone pour éviter les routes les plus fréquentées où les désertions de porteurs étaient plus fréquentes. Selon Victor Giraud lui-même, ce sont les préparatifs de son voyage qui furent le plus difficile. Afin de se préparer au mieux pour son voyage, il se documente grâce aux ouvrages de ses prédécesseurs en Afrique comme Mungo Park ou David Livingstone. Lors de son expédition vers le lac Bangoueolo et avant de quitter Zanzibar, il a été reçu en grande pompe par le sultan de Zanzibar (sa Hautesse Saïd Bargach) grâce à qui il put préparer sa caravane plus facilement. Il est présent lors du départ d'Ernest Cambier de Zanzibar le 4 décembre et commence à recruter ses porteurs ensuite. Le 15 décembre, le matériel et les hommes sont chargés sur le navire que les emmènent vers la cote (le Boursaint) à Dar es Salam. Sa caravane est composée de cent-vingt personnes. Après avoir traversé le Tuussaghara, l'Uhébé, l'Ubéma, l'explorateur se dirigea vers le sud du Nyassa et de là, à travers le Chambézi, au grand lac Bangouélo. Lorsqu'il atteignit le lac, Giraud envoya sa caravane en avant vers le pays lumba du roi Gazembi. Après plusieurs jours de navigation avec une compagnie restreinte, il se trouve bloqué par les chutes de Louassoula. À ce moment, les rives étaient couvertes d'autochtones en armes qui le menaçaient. Il put résister pendant trois jours avant de se retrouver acculé aux chutes et fut fait prisonnier. Après trois mois de captivité, le français réussit à s'échapper et à gagner le village de Gazembi. Le chef, loin de lui apporter son soutien, le rançonna et prit tout ce qui lui restait. Victor Giraud partit alors vers la station de Karéma (créée par Ernest Cambier. Il passa trois mois à la station pour se remettre et faire quelques études scientifiques sur le lac. Il décida ensuite de remonter une expédition pour gagner le Congo mais ses propres hommes mirent à mal ses projets en lui extorquant son matériel et en l'assiégeant dans la station. Il fut donc obligé de prendre le chemin du retour vers Quillimane ou il arriva après deux ans de voyage très difficile.
