‎Summary The fifth to the ninth centuries were a formative period around the Mediterranean, in which new forces were redefining traditional social divisions. This volume will look at these centuries through the lens of inclusion and exclusion as social forces at work on the self, the community, and society as a whole. For late antique and early medieval societies, inclusion and exclusion were the means of redrawing the boundaries of cultural and political discourse, and ultimately, of deciding how resources - material, spiritual, and intellectual - were allocated. This is the first of two volumes to explore inclusion and exclusion as processes affecting Mediterranean communities. Contributions to the present volume look at how distinctions were fostered through both space and text, along ethnic and religious lines, and at the level of both ecumenical councils and individual friendships. By examining a wide range of social and cultural phenomena, from historiography and political partisanship to private religious worship and the performance of the feast, the chapters of this volume illustrate the exceptional range of ways that late antique and early medieval people negotiated their place in a changing world, and brought a new one into being. ‎Desmond Young, général anglais, retrace, de 1914 à sa mort, la carrière de Rommel qu'il a connu en pleine action puisqu'il fut son adversaire dans le désert de Libye. L'auteur s'est attaché à dégager la personnalité de cet étrange général du Reich qui avait, en quelques mois acquis une stature légendaire aux yeux des soldats anglais d'Afrique, peu sensibles pourtant au prestige personnel. Qui était Rommel ? Grâce à la famille et aux compagnons d'armes du Feld-maréchal, Desmond Young a pu compulser des archives privées qui lui permettent de donner une réponse détaillée et définitive à cette question. Il décrit toutes les étapes de son grand adversaire : son commandement dans les Alpes autrichiennes, son action dans la campagne de France en 1940, ses offensives et ses retraites à la tête de l'Afrika Korps, son rôle dans la défense du Mur de l'Atlantique et enfin sa participation au tragique complot contre Hitler, rôle qui lui valut d'être assassiné par l'homme qui avait fait de lui un maréchal du Reich. — "Voici une étude sur Rommel à laquelle d'autres historiens ajouteront peut-être quelques details notamment en ce qui touche les opérations mais qui ne sera dépassée par aucune autre pour la probité qui a constamment guidé l'auteur. D'ailleurs, le brigadier général Desmond Young ne s'est pas proposé de suivre Rommel pas à pas dans tous ses combats, mais bien de mettre en lumière les traits d'une physionomie remarquable d'officier allemand. A cet effet il ne s'est epargné aucune peine pour nous laisser un portrait fidèle d'un modèle qui lui a inspiré une grande admiration. Après avoir fait une bonne partie de la campagne de Libye au cours de laquelle les troupes de Rommel le capturèrent devant Gazala, D. Young, qui s'est evadé d'Italie à l'époque de la débâcle de Mussolini, s'est rendu en Allemagne après la fin des hostilités et y a séjourné auprès de la famille, des amis, des anciens officiers de Rommel, pour mener une enquête scrupuleuse et nourrie de données puisées aussi près des sources que possible. (...) La dernière partie de l'ouvrage, longuement développée par Desmond Young est tout spécialement intéressante. Les témoignages de Mme Rommel, ceux du général Speidel, dernier chef d'état-major du maréchal, qui fut arrête par les S.S. et eut la chance de se tirer d'une situation désespérée, ceux de l'ancien maire de Stuttgart, le Dr Strölin, qui entraîna Rommel dans la conspiration devant mettre Hitler hors d'état de nuire, d'autres encore, éclairent d'une manière saisissante la fin de Rommel.
