Koloß / Völkerkundemuseum Berlin. - Englisch. - The daily application of kaolin (the frequently multi hued white chalk found along stream and riverbanks in the tropical rainforest areas of West and Central Africa) onto the upper body and faces of the young female Sande initiates seems to be done on a dayly basis, with varying degrees of complexity. For instance the Ma Bahn Bassa (a Bassa subgroup) seem to apply the kaolin without designs (ie. in one solid coat), while the River Cess Bassa frequently break up this single coat with elaborate designs. They either use a kind of finger-painting or stamp out attractive patterns with kaolin, for example by dipping a comb, a matchbox or some other common household object into the kaolin and stamp a pattern onto their body and face. They turn their bodies into a sort of canvas with these designs changing from day to day, displaying tremendous imagination. Charles Miller III also noted in the field that a salmon colored pink pigment (probably also with a kaolin base) was used amongst the River Cess Bassa for application onto the bodies of recent Sande Society graduates, instead of the rich red palm oil frequently noted as the body decoration applied to the bodies of Sande graduates noted by other field researchers. (Please note, that all of these above described field observations are illustrated in the field photographs by Charles Miller III accompanying the exhibition). … Taken in the town of Dwazahn not far from Monrovia, this girl is from the Ma Bahn, one of several subgroups of the Bassa. The photographer has been visiting this village for many years now, and this shot was taken during the performance of three Bundu masks (helmet-type masks representing a woman's head and neck) which are used during the initiation rituals of the Sande Society in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It took more than five years for the photographer to gain permission to film these rites, and even then, with permission of the Chief and the elders of both the Sande and Poro Societies, the presence of a non-initiate (and a white foreigner) created conflict in the community. … (Seite 9)
