Tratta dalla rara edizione italiana della Geographia Universalis, edita nel 1558<BR>Secondo stato della prima mappa dell'intero continente africano e un vero e proprio capolavoro della cartografia rinascimentale. Qualche brunitura e lieve traccia di sporco marginale, professionale restauro alla piegatura centrale in basso.<BR>Questa importantissima carta rappresenta la prima mappa ragionevolmente ottenibile che raffigura l'intero continente africano, una fantastica sinergia visiva di immaginazione arcaica ed esplorazione recente. La forma complessiva del continente è abbastanza ben definita, essendo stata ampiamente esplorata dai portoghesi fin dai tempi del principe Enrico il Navigatore, a metà del XV secolo, come evidenziato dalla comparsa di una caravella nella parte inferiore della mappa. I vari regni africani sono indicati dai simboli pittorici della corona e dello scettro. Secondo la tradizione tolemaica, il Nilo ha la sua sorgente in una serie di laghi che si trovano ai piedi delle misteriose Montagne della Luna. La terra intorno al Capo di Buona Speranza, in Sudafrica, è abbellita dall'apparizione di un elefante, mentre i pappagalli esotici occupano gli alberi in Angola. La cosa più divertente è che vicino alla costa dell'Africa orientale, il "Monoculi", o uomo con un occhio solo immaginato dagli scrittori classici, siede in attesa di un ipotetico visitatore europeo. <BR>Münster fu un brillante polimatico e uno dei più importanti intellettuali dell'epoca rinascimentale. Formatosi a Tubinga, i suoi quaderni universitari sopravvissuti, il Kollegienbuch, rivelano una mente dalla curiosità insaziabile, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la cosmografia. In seguito Münster divenne professore di ebraico a Heidelberg e poi, dal 1529, all'Università di Basilea. Negli anni Trenta del Quattrocento si dedicò alla traduzione della Geografia di Tolomeo, aggiungendo nuovo materiale relativo alle nuove terre scoperte in Africa, nelle Americhe e in Asia. Il risultato fu la pubblicazione della sua apprezzata Geographia Universalis, stampata per la prima volta nel 1540. Münster aveva lavorato a raccogliere informazioni al fine di ottenere un'opera che non deludesse le aspettative e, dopo un'ulteriore pubblicazione in tedesco abbellita da 910 stampe su legno, giunse nel 1550 all'edizione definitiva in latino, illustrata da 970 silografie. Vi furono poi numerose edizioni in diverse lingue, fra cui latino, francese, italiano, inglese e ceco. Dopo la sua morte di Münster (1552), Heinrich Petri prima, e il figlio Sebastian poi, continuarono la pubblicazione dell’opera. La Cosmographia universalis fu uno dei libri più popolari e di successo del XVI secolo, e vide ben 24 edizioni in 100 anni: l'ultima edizione tedesca venne pubblicata nel 1628, molto tempo dopo la morte dell'autore. La Cosmographia conteneva non solo le ultime mappe e vedute di tutte le città più famose, ma anche una serie di notizie enciclopediche di dettagli relative al mondo conosciuto, e sconosciuto. Il particolare successo anche commerciale di quest'opera fu dovuto in parte alle belle incisioni (tra i cui autori si possono citate Hans Holbein il Giovane, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, David Kandel). Carta tratta dalla Geographia universalis, vetus et nova, complectens. Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini Ennarationis libros VIII, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1540 a Basilea da Heinrich Petri, figliastro di Münster e suo fidatissimo stampatore. Il volume è illustrato da 27 carte costruite seguendo le indicazioni di Tolomeo, a cui si affiancano 21 carte “moderne”, delineate in base alle recenti scoperte geografiche. La Geographia di Münster ebbe un notevole successo, e Petri la ristampò l'anno seguente (1541) e quello successivo ancora. Aumentate di sei le carte moderne, tra le quali la Carta Marina di Olao Magnus descrittiva della Scandinavia, l'editore la ristampò ancora nel 1545, nel 1551 e infine nel 1552, sempre con 54 carte geografiche, ma con la sostituzione della Pomerania al posto del Lago di Costanza. Alla scomparsa di Münster l’opera non venne più ristampata; alcune delle carte furono invece utilizzate da Heinrich Petri per le edizioni postume della Cosmographiae Universalis. Le matrici lignee, debitamente emendate, furono poi utilizzate per il Rerum Geographicarum dello Strabo, edizione stampata a Basileae: Ex Officina Henricpetriana, 1571 Mense Augusto. The book is illustrated by 27 maps built following the indications of Ptolemy, which are flanked by 21 "modern" maps, outlined on the basis of recent geographical discoveries. The Geographia of Münster was a great success, and Petri reprinted it the following year (1541) and then in 1542.. Having increased the number of modern maps by six, including the Carta Marina of Olao Magnus describing Scandinavia, the publisher reprinted it again in 1545, in 1551 and finally in 1552, still with 54 maps, but with the substitution of Pomerania in place of Lake Constance. Plate taken from the Cosmographiae Universalis, Latin edition, Basel, second half of the 16th Century. The Cosmographiae Universalis of Sebastian Münster (1488-1552), printed for the first time in Basel in 1544 by the publisher Heinrich Petri, was updated several times and increased with new maps and urban representations in its many editions until the beginning of the next century. Münster had worked to collect information in order to obtain a work that did not disappoint expectations and, after a further publication in German embellished with 910 woodblock prints, arrived in 1550 to the final edition in Latin, illustrated by 970 woodcuts. There were then numerous editions in different languages, including Latin, French, Italian, English and Czech. After his death in Münster (1552), Heinrich Petri first, and then his son Sebastian, continued the publication of the work. The Cosmographia universalis was one of the most popular and successful books of the 16th century, and saw as many as 24 editions in 100 years: the last German edition was published in 1628, long after the author's death. The Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps and views of all the most famous cities, but also a series of encyclopedic details related to the known, and unknown, world. The particular commercial success of this work was due in part to the beautiful engravings (among whose authors can be mentioned Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, David Kandel).
