Schweinfurth . who submitted to the Royal Academy of Science a plan for the botanical exploration of the equatorial districts lying west of the Nile . During three years he was absent in the heart of Africa and even before he had returned his name had already become famous in Europe and America. "Travelling not in the footsteps of Baker but in a westerly direction he reached the neighbourhood of Baker's lake passing through the country of the Niam-Niam and visiting the unknown kingdom of Monbuttoo . a scientific botanist and also an accomplished draughtsman . (con mancanze, un piatto poster. mal restaurato), pp. (4),IV,508; (4),434; ben illustrato nel t. da 139 inc. su legno, anche a piena pag., e con 2 carte geografiche f.t., di cui 1 più volte ripieg. “Son voyage le mène de Khartoum à Bahr-el-Ghazal en suivant le Nil blanc puis, en compagnie de marchands d'ivoire, il traverse les régions habitées par les Diours, Dinka, Bongo et Niam-Niam. Il entre ensuite dans le pays des Mangbettu (Monbuttu) et découvre la rivière Welle qui ne fait pas partie du bassin hydrographique du Nil, et qu'il pensa erronément lié au lac Tchad (en réalité affluent du fleuve Congo). En 1871 il découvre en Afrique centrale des figurines sculptées, c'est le début des dits Arts Nègres en Europe”. "Edizione originale della versione in francese". Brockhaus à Leipzig, on notera qu'en 1874 il sort également une édition New-Yorkaise chez Harper & Brothers (Le décor du cartonnage est différent), ce qui fait de l'édition anglaise la véritable édition originale de ce texte important. 2 volumes In-8° reliés pleine percaline verte de l'éditeur décors dorés et estampés à froid sur les premiers plats et les dos. Premier volume : XVI pages (errata) 559 pages, 1 carte hors-texte dépliante à la page VII deuxième volume : X pages 521 pages, 1 carte hors-texte après la page X, nombreuses gravures in et hors texte (26 planches hors-texte), reliure de l'époque, bon exemplaire.
