The oldest object in the collection is almost six hundred years old! It is one of many objects that were taken to Europe by explorers, traders, missionaries, doctors, and collectors from museums who were visiting Africa. The first Europeans in Africa came to explore the unknown continent, to make money and to teach their religion to the African peoples. People in Europe became very curious about Africa, and more and more objects were collected and taken back to show them. One of the places where these objects were studied and admired in Europe, was the Museum of Ethnology in the harbour town of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. A museum of ethnology studies how people live and displays objects that were made by people from all over the world. Much like the museum you are standing in now, a museum of ethnology shows us objects that are not in the space they were made for. It is a place where we take special notice of the objects and try to understand what they meant to the people who made them. We try to discover how those people lived. In this resource we speak about the objects in the past tense. This does not mean that all these traditions are dead, but refers to the time that the objects were collected. Many of the old traditions survive and continue alongside new traditions today. "Umuntu ngumuntu nja banye abantu," quotes the South African writer Elza Miles in the large red catalogue that goes with this exhibition. She is quoting the words of the South African artist Ernest Mancoba when he expresses an ancient African idea: "Man is man on account of other people". We are who we are because of other people ... In most instances only those objects in relatively durable materials-such as metal or fired clay-survive. Pottery, even broken, offers the archaeologist evidence of the cultures that once occupied a site or an area. Sequences of form and modeled, painted, impressed, or incised decoration reflect cultural changes and give some hint of the changing history of an area. Figures modeled in clay and then fired are among the earliest evidence of sculptural activity in sub-Saharan Africa. The Nok terra-cottas of northern Nigeria dating to perhaps two thousand years ago are one example (cat. no. 72). Later examples are known from the inland delta region of the Niger River, the Djenne terra-cottas (cat. no. 4). Some metal objects have been recovered archaeologically from societies or periods now lost, such as at Igbo-Ukwu and Ife in Nigeria, and some have survived above ground, for instance, those from kingdoms that were known to early European travelers, such as the Nigerian kingdom of Benin (cat. nos. 45-46). For the greater part the arts of Africa do not long survive, and most of what we know of the forms and styles has been derived from objects in perishable materials collected within the past century. And these rarely have seen more than a generation or two of use. One extremely rare exception is the wooden Yoruba divination board (cat. no. 30), which was collected before 1659. Nearly every African sculpture in a museum, collection, or exhibition has had its life cycle interrupted. Made to be used and then used up or perhaps accidently destroyed by fire, climate, or insects, the sculptures were meant to be replaced. The replacement quite literally took the place of the lost piece, which in itself had most probably been a replacement. I once was shown a broken terra-cotta figure of a queen mother among the Kwahu of Ghana. The chief who showed it to me noted that it was newly broken and that it would now have to be replaced. Produced between February 1802 and 1830 on the orders of Naopleon Bonaparte and published between 1809 and 1828, 1,000 copies were printed and distributed to institutions, on vergé paper with an 'Égypte ancienne et moderne' watermark, visible when held up to the light. Light marginal spotting not touching image, otherwise in very fresh, fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte, one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799, the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates, of which 72 colored, as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The 'Egyptian campaign', militarily a disaster, demonstrates, through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte, the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte [Egyptian Institute] who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge, the chemist Berthollet, the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists, engineers, architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition, the so-called "Imperial" edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats, two of which were specially created for it and christened "Moyen-Egypte" and "Grand-Egypte". A special press was built to print it, the process extending over 20 years, from 1809 to 1829. The "Imperial" edition proved so popular that a second edition, this time in black and white and without the "Egypte ancienne et moderne" watermark - known as the "Royal Edition" - was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke (Paris). The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon, illustrator, diplomat, collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon (the Louvre). His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there, thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte. Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51, reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte, the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté (brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, author of Roses), the mineralogist Dolomiue, and the draughtsman Joly, Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When, however, he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798, he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself, he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
