Bibliothèque scientifique)‎ ‎Ce livre, riche en observations inédites, illustré de magnifiques photographies documentaires dues à un spécialiste (M. Vergiat, adjudant aviateur, s'est longtemps occupé de photographie aérienne) intéressera passionnément tous ceux qui aiment la brousse africaine et la forêt vierge et qui s'attachent à l'étude de la vie encore si mystérieuse des peuplades de cette forêt. L'A. a observé de près, pendant trois ans, les Noirs de l'Oubangui. Il sut gagner la confiance d'un grand féticheur de la forêt de Bangui, et grâce à lui, il put, sans avoir besoin de se dissimuler, assister à de nombreuses cérémonies secrètes d'initiation : rites de la circoncision et de l'excision, réunion des sociétés secrètes et des confréries groupées sous un signe animal, pratiques d'envoûtement, exorcismes, etc. De ces cérémonies, il n'a pas seulement rapporté des notes prises sur le vif, mais aussi des photographies de scènes qu'aucun Européen n'avait pu encore observer. C'est ce qui fait la grande valeur de ce livre. L'Auteur nous révèle aussi la part importante que les plantes tiennent dans les rites d'initiation. Religion, magie, médecine sont intimement liées et on passe insensiblement de l'une à l'autre. La vie végétale débordante de la forêt fait peur au Primitif : il a le culte des phénomènes naturels. Nombre de plantes ont des propriétés magiques et leur connaissance, leur usage jouent un grand rôle dans les phénomènes d'initiation. Avec le concours d'un botaniste distingué le R. P. Tisserant, l'A. pu vérifier la plupart des plantes magiques qu'il cite et il en donne non seulement les noms vernaculaires en banda et mandja, mais aussi les noms scientifiques, ce qui donne encore une valeur plus particulière à ses observations. M. Vergiat ne s'est pas contenté de dépeindre des cérémonies souvent grossières et cruelles : il en a recherché le pourquoi et il a montré qu'elles avaient souvent un rôle éducatif. L'initiation a pour objet de préparer l'homme à sa fonction sociale future. Les épreuves ont pour but de purifier le Primitif, de le rendre insensible à la douleur physique, de lui apprendre à dominer ses sens, d'élever son esprit par le silence et la méditation, de lui révéler les anciens usages de la tribu, grâce auxquels elle se maintient forte. Condamné à un régime frugal et végétarien, l'individu voit ses qualités morales se développer. S'il n'est pas capable de les supporter, le néophyte peut être mis à mort, car l'homme ne doit pas reculer, il doit toujours aller vers le but à atteindre. Les initiations auraient donc aussi une portée spirituelle et religieuse. « Cette étude nous montre, écrit l'A. page 77, l'indigène digne d'intérêt et profondément humain dans ses aspirations vers l'idéal, dans ses tâtonnements gauches, dans ses recherches incertaines parfois brutales et sanglantes, dans ses efforts maladroits pour accéder à une vie spirituelle supérieure. Nous devons l'aider, l'instruire et le diriger dans cette marche progressive, dans cette ascension vers la clarté, vers la vraie civilisation ». Le livre de M. Vergiat en nous révélant la vie mystérieuse des Noirs de l'Oubangui a donc aussi un but très humain. « Grâce à lui, écrit le Général Bouscat, c'est comme un rayon de lumière qui est projeté dans cette case impénétrable qu'est la vie secrète des populations de l'Oubangui ».
