Brunet VII, 510;Blackmer 611 L'auteur (1838-1914) est à la fois historien orientaliste, journaliste et secrétaire de Ferdinand de Lesseps.En 1854, il devient cadre de la Compagnie du Canal de Suez.Eugène Cicéri a réalisé quelques paysages en Afrique du Nord qui lui valent d'être aussi classé parmi les orientalistes. Seuls 500 exemplaires ont été publiés. parmi ceux ci 200 ont été réservés pour Ismaïl Pacha Vice Roi d'Efype. Il s'est senti insulté par la préface de Fontane qui a accordé tout le crédit de ce projet à de de Lesseps, et il a fait retiré de ses 200 exemplaires, à la fois, le portrait de de Lesseps en frontispice et la préface de Fontane.‎

‎Rare édition originale de cette relation dun voyage en Orient dû à Victor Fontanier (1796-1857), naturaliste de formation, attaché à lambassade de France à Constantinople. Il sagit de son premier voyage exécuté par ordre du gouvernement français, qui sera suivi dun second intitulé deuxième voyage en Anatolie pendant les années 1830 à 1833 (Paris, 1834). Normalien et membre de la société de géographie, Fontanier entame son voyage en 1821. Il séjourne à Constantinople, à Odessa et dans les provinces russes du Caucase. Il atteint ensuite Bakou ainsi que les bords de la mer Caspienne, arrive en Perse par Erevan, Nakhitchevan et Tabriz. Il passe alors par Bagdad et Hamadan et descend le Tigre jusquà Bassora. Fontanier se rend alors en Géorgie en passant par le sud de la Perse, parcourt le Guriel et la Mingrélie avant de retourner à Constantinople en longeant la côte Lazique ou Lazistan (côtes de la mer Noire, pays des Lazes) tout en empruntant les routes les moins parcourues pour gagner la capitale du vaste Empire ottoman, occasion pour lui de se livrer à de nouvelles observations. Il quitte Constantinople pour Smyrne par Brousse, Apollonie et Mohalich. Il achève alors enfin son très long périple par la visite des îles de lArchipel grec en pleine guerre dIndépendance grecque (1821-1830). S'il déclare lui-même que la cadence de ce voyage fut rapide et épuisante, elle ne l'empêcha pas pas de recueillir un nombre important de renseignements géographiques, géologiques, ainsi que de précieux détails sur les murs des populations visitées. Le récit de Fontanier, rédigé à la première personne, est vif et poignant, il livre avec sincérité ses aventures, impressions et réflexions sur les très nombreuses personnes rencontrées, ainsi que paysages et cultures découverts. Au chapitre XVIII (p. 249) sur la Turquie, à Amasya, lauteur raconte un incident qui faillit lui coûter la vie: je me décidai à parcourir les environs, et, à cet effet, je me dis à mon domestique de voir si mon fusil était en bon état, Il tira un coup en lair et le replaça dans la chambre que joccupais et devant laquelle je déjeunais. Tout à coup un Turc se présente, parcours, sans autre formalité lappartement de larchevêque, puis entre chez moi et se saisit de mon fusil sans dire un mot. Je veux le reprendre, et mon domestique venant à mon secours, nous parvenons à le lui arracher, mais alors il présente son pistolet et nous sommes obligés de lui montrer les nôtres Louvrage est illustré de huit planches : une mosquée, une grande carte dépliante de lOrient, des coupes de terrains, des plans de fortification et de terrain, une vue de la grande caverne dAmasya et des inscriptions copiées sur les colonnes de la plaine de Bolo. (heavy foxing, some spotting). Contemporary full speckled basane, smooth spine decorated and titled in red morocco, gilt fillet on edges, marbled edges and endpapers (spine and corners restored). Rare first edition of this account of a trip to the Orient by Victor Fontanier (1796-1857), a naturalist by training attached to the French Embassy in Constantinople. This was his first trip by order of the French government, followed by a second entitled Deuxième voyage en Anatolie pendant les années 1830 à 1833 (Paris, 1834). A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and member of the Société de Géographie, Fontanier began his journey in 1821. He visited Constantinople, Odessa and the Russian provinces of the Caucasus. He then reached Baku and the shores of the Caspian Sea, arriving in Persia via Yerevan, Nakhchivan and Tabriz. He then passed through Baghdad and Hamadan, and down the Tigris to Basra. Fontanier then travelled to Georgia via southern Persia, through Guriel and Mingrelia, before returning to Constantinople along the Lazic or Lazistan coast (Black Sea coast, land of the Lazes), taking the roads less traveled to reach the capital of the vast Ottoman Empire, an opportunity for him to make further observations. He left Constantinople for Smyrna via Brousse, Apollonie and Mohalich. Finally, he completed his very long journey by visiting the islands of the Greek Archipelago in the midst of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830). Although he himself declares that the pace of this journey was rapid and exhausting, it did not prevent him from gathering a wealth of geographical and geological information, as well as invaluable details on the customs of the populations he visited. Fontanier's narrative, written in the first person, is lively and poignant, as he candidly recounts his adventures, impressions and reflections on the many people he met, as well as the landscapes and cultures he discovered. In chapter XVIII (p. 249) on Turkey, in Amasya, the author recounts an incident that almost cost him his life: "I decided to explore the surrounding area, and to this end I asked my servant to see if my rifle was in good condition, he fired a shot into the air and replaced it in the room I was occupying and in front of which I was having breakfast. Suddenly, a Turk appeared, walked through the archbishop's apartment without further formality, then entered my house and seized my rifle without saying a word. I want it back, and my servant coming to my rescue, we manage to wrest it from him, but then he presents his pistol and we are obliged to show him ours...". The work is illustrated with eight plates: a mosque, a large fold-out map of the Orient, sections of land, fortification and ground plans, a view of the great Amasya cave and inscriptions copied from columns on the Bolo plain. A fine copy of this account of an incredible and interminable journey to the Orient.‎
