The first edition of this very scarce personal account of the expedition to the equatorial regions of the Nile with their mission being the suppression of the slave trade. The 1869 expedition was led by the author of this work Samuel Baker at the request of his friend Isma'il Pasha the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan. This military expedition was intended to create a commercial relationship. They started in Cairo with 1700 Egyptian troops and the Khedive gave Baker the rank of pasha and major-general in the Ottoman army. This work outlines their journey experiences and logistics. To the introductory chapter Baker notes 'This enterprise is the practical result of my original explorations in which I had been an eye-witness to the horrors of the slave trade which I determined if possible to suppress. ' 'As a duty to the Khedive and in justice to myself I shall describe the principal incidents as they occurred throughout the expedition. The civilized world will be judge and jury: if their verdict be favourable I shall have my reward. ' Complete in two volumes. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown Percy Livingstone Dickson. The bookplate is by Sidney Hunt. Percy Livingstone Dickson was the Curate of Selston from 1924-5. Following this he held office as the head master of St Ives Grammar School Huntingdonshire 1927-8. Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece a large folding map of the route and a further twenty plates. With a frontispiece and thirty plates to volume II. Collated complete. A comprehensive account of this journey through Central Africa with the advantage of being by Sir Samuel White Baker the leader of the expedition. This is one of many expeditions undertaken by Baker who is known for his discovery of 'Lake Albert' during his 1864 expedition along the Nile. Condition: In the original full cloth bindings. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Small loss to the head and tail of spines from bumping and rubbing. Both volumes are cocked. Front hinge to volume I is strained but firm with evidence of previous adhesive repair the remnants of which remain to the endpapers. Bookplate to the front pastedown Percy Livingstone Dickson. Tape repair to the verso of front endpaper to volume I. Internally both volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are very bright. Closed tear to the top of page 80 to volume II not affecting any text. Occasional handling marks and just the odd spot. Overall Condition: Good. ont> Macmillan and Co : London hardcover‎

‎"Le Journal d'un Bourgeois du Caire est dû à Ibn Iyâs et, dans l'oeuvre de G. Wiet, forme la suite de l'Histoire des Mamlouks Circassiens, t. II, éditée en 1945 par l'Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire et relatant les évènements entre les années 1467 et 1500. Les présents volumes traitent du début du XVIe siècle jusqu'en novembre 1522, époque capitale puisqu'elle prépare la fin des sultans mamlouks et consomme la décadence de la puissance égyptienne. Le premier volume s'arrête avant la victoire de Selim Ier à Merdj Dabiq (près Alep) sur les troupes du sultan d'Egypte Malik Ashraf, de son vrai nom Qun-suh al-Ghûri, qui y trouva la mort. Après cette victoire amenée par la défection de l'aile droite d'Al-Ghûri, les Ottomans ne devaient pas tarder à mettre la main sur l'Egypte. Ibn Iyâs nous montre Malik Ashraf se débattant dans les difficultés financières les plus graves qui entraînaient la désaffection de ses troupes et l'hostilité de ses sujets. C'est que la découverte de Vasco de Gama amenait une perte considérable pour le commerce égyptien. Encouragé, dit-on, par les Vénitiens, le sultan organisa une flotte qui inquiéta les Portugais sur les côtes des Indes. L'état des finances égyptiennes accule le sultan d'Egypte aux expédients les plus fâcheux. Il pressure les marchands et les pensionnés, supprime la solde des mamlouks les plus anciens, dépouille les fondations pieuses, abaisse le titre de la monnaie. La vénalité des charges ne développe pas la moralité des fonctionnaires qui se rattrapent sur le particulier. Les conséquences ne tardent pas à se faire sentir. Les mamlouks en arrivent même à se plaindre moins du retard de leur solde qu'à réclamer « l'abolition des taxes mensuelles et hebdomadaires qui pèsent sur les petits boutiquiers, sur toutes les denrées, si bien qu'ils ne trouvent plus à manger... la suppression de toutes les mesures arbitraires, les confiscations par exemple (p. 447) ». A la fin de 1515, un grand fonctionnaire s'était enfui auprès de Selim Ier, excitant ce dernier contre les actes tyranniques du sultan d'Egypte, le mettant au courant des abus et de la situation financière, le renseignant sur l'armée d'Egypte. « II l'encouragea vivement à envahir l'Egypte, en lui présentant l'opération comme aisée » (p. 435). Ainsi fut fait. Du même coup la dynastie circassienne disparut et le commerce des Portugais ne fut plus inquiété." (René Dussaud, Syria, 1955)‎
