‎Un volume in 12°, reliure rigide , dos toilé de couleur jaune avec une pièce de titre en maroquin rouge brun, plats légèrement marbrés, couverture initiale conservée (couleur vert pâle), 326 pages dont une table des matières et, en ouverture, une importante préface de Léon CLADEL (XXXII). Il ne s’agit ici que du 2ème tome d’un récit complet mais sa force est considérable. Difficile de trouver l’équivalent dans la dénonciation littéraire des excés -euphémisme- de la colonisation de l’Algérie par la France. Dénonciation littéraire, certes, mais inspirée à son auteur pas sa propre expérience. Sous ce XXX se cache le nom de Hector FRANCE qui fut officier de cette guerre de conquête et qui participa , par ailleurs, à l’insurrection de la Commune de Paris (qu’il a relatée dans un texte intitulé “Revanche!”). Lisons quelques lignes du préfacier Léon CLADEL, écrivain lui aussi (L’HOMME DE LA CROIX-AUX-BOEUFS, OMPRDRAILLES etc): “Nous assistons brusquement, enflammés de courroux et soulevés d’indignation, à des sacs inouïs, à des tueries sans nom, à des carnages, à des holocaustes que nul fumeur d’opium, aucun mangeur de haschish n’a rêvés, à des viols trois fois sacrilèges accomplis, en une mare poupre sur la mère étreignant ses fils morts, sur les vierges en présence de leurs frères et de leurs amants garottés, sur l’épouse baisant le sein, percé par les baïonettes de son époux encore vivant, à des saturnales, à des priapées, à d’horribles sabbats où Lesbos et Sodome s’entremêlent, à quelque nuit de Walpurgis, à l’on ne sait quelle Messe Noire enfin, où la soldatesque en rut force des filles publiques et les laisse déchirées, souillées, pantelantes, béantes, crevées sur place , après de sauvages coïts perpétrés au cri tutélaire de Vive l’Empereur”… Quant à l’auteur lui-même, Hector FRANCE (1837-1908, fils d’un militaire suspendu pour avoir dénoncé l’esclavage dans les Antilles), il commence ce tome 2 intitulé A L’ASSAUT DES LUPANARS de la manière suivante: “TUER”. Et on peut lire à la fin de ce premier chapitre les lignes suivantes “Tout petit, les jeux cruels de mes camarades me répugnaient et ce n’est qu’avec horreur et indignation que je les voyais martyriser les insectes, arracher les ailes aux mouches, décapiter les hannetons... Cependant, tout à coup, sans que je sache comment, il me vint comme aux autres une rage de sang dont je fus moi-même stupéfait, et je ne rêvais plus, moi aussi, qu’à déflorer mon sabre”.Cet exemplaire, rare et édition originale, est en TRES BON ETAT.‎
