In very good to fine condition. 29 pp. FIRST and ONLY EDITION Freire d'Andrade 1859-1929 headed a delegation sent to South Africa in 1921 to negotiate a trade agreement between Mozambique and the Union of South Africa; Portugal had had an agreement with the Transvaal but the unification and the Great War had led to the need for a new one. He analyzes the economic and political situation of South Africa summarizing his discussions with Prime Minister Jan Smuts pp. 14-15 and giving an assessment of the government's stability pp. 4-5. After four years as governor of Mozambique Freire d'Andrade was uniquely qualified to evaluate the needs of that colony and how an agreement with South Africa might affect it and he freely offers his opinions on such matters. He was particularly concerned with emigration and with making the railroads profitable and more broadly with what Portugal should do to maintain its empire. On his visit to South Africa in February and March 1908 Conacher was charged by the Cape Government the Natal Government and the Railway Committee of the C.S.A.R. to gather and analyze information on railway traffic to the interior from ports in Cape Colony Natal and Lourenço Marques to the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony. He was to study how it was affected by port and harbor facilities whether the railways would function more efficiently under a single administration whether rates were in line with expenses and how statistics on the railways could most efficiently be compiled. For that purpose he was given full access to all railway records and officials and he traveled on nearly all the lines as well as meeting many of those in charge of shipping goods. The numerous tables contain statistics on goods shipped costs income and expenses.This work was printed the year before an important convention was signed between Mozambique and the Transvaal. It was presumably intended to assist the British in their negotiations. Conacher was told not to concern himself with political affairs. The author is probably the same John Conacher who figured prominently among British railway men. In 1891 he was appointed General Manager on the National British Railway but was eventually forced to resign due to the Machiavellian manoeuvres of the N.B.R. Board. NUC: DLC NN ICJ. Original full leather blocked in gilt and blind later rebacked retaining most of the original backstrip; all edges gilt; leaves a little cockled and tanned with a few slightly marked and foxed; expert conservation to a split near the head of the spine to the front free endpaper and the three leaves of text comprising the title leaf and two leaves of introductory notes by the photographer; overall a very good copy with the plates in excellent condition. A lavish photographic survey of Cape Colony Natal Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic with a particular focus on the 'scenery gold and diamond mining districts and mines seaports and the native industries and life of South Africa' from the foreword. <p>This copy has the additional interest and value of a large albumen silver photograph 205 × 282 mm mounted on the verso of the front free endpaper acting as a frontispiece. the margin below the plate is captioned '"Tweedie Hall" Natal Taken by the architect while the house was being built in 1892'. Jacqueline Kalley's book 'Farmhouses of Old Natal' records that the house was built by James and Eliza Morton and the name comes from Tweedie Hall in Scotland where they were married. They arrived at Port Natal in 1868 purchased a farm and over time acquired some 12000 acres of land. Morton sold agricultural machinery and built the first silos in Natal. The grand house was designed by the prolific Natal architect William Street-Wilson; it survives to this day and is currently owned by a great-grandson of the Mortons. Vintage 19th century map in very good condition. John Tallis 7 November 1817 – 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". Februar 1935 in Stellenbosch[1]), im Volksmund später Pienk Piet genannt, war ein südafrikanischer Theologe und Missionar, dessen Vorfahren als Hugenotten in das Kapland eingewandert waren.[1][2] Er setzte sich in seiner Rolle als Professor der Theologie für den sozialen Ausgleich zwischen den Bevölkerungsgruppen in Südafrika ein. Seine akademische Ausbildung erlangte Du Plessis am Theologischen Seminar der Universität Stellenbosch und später an der Universität Edinburgh. Er schloss die Studienzeit mit einem Doktorgrad ab. Danach unternahm er ausgedehnte Wanderungen in Afrika südlich der Saharazone. Im Jahr 1894 erhielt Du Plessis die Ordination in der Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) und wurde 1903 Generalsekretär für die Missionsarbeit. Zwischen 1913 und 1930 lehrte er am Theologischen Seminar der Universität Stellenbosch Missionsarbeit und Neutestamentliche Theologie. Im Jahr 1921 verfasste er zusammen mit zehn führenden Vertretern der südafrikanischen Niederländisch-reformierten Kirche (DRC) ein Manifest (The Dutch Reformed Church and the Native Problem), worin die Haltung seiner Kirche gegen den Vorwurf von Davidson Don Tengo Jabavu verteidigt wurde, wonach sie Positionen gegen die einheimische schwarze Bevölkerung vertrat. Auf einer interkirchlichen Konferenz zur Missionsarbeit im Jahre 1923 verständigten sich afrikaanische Kirchenvertreter, englisch orientierte Missionare und führende schwarze Religionspersönlichkeiten zu gemeinsamen Positionen. Du Plessis leitete diese Gruppe, die mit ihrer zentralen Kritik die ungerechten Gesellschaftsverhältnisse im damaligen Südafrika öffentlich benannte und der südafrikanischen Regierung einen diesbezüglichen Forderungskatalog übermittelte. Im Verlauf dieses Prozesses verlor Du Plessis zunehmend seinen ökumenisch orientierten Einfluss in der DRC. Vertreter seiner Kirche bezichtigten ihn der Ketzerei. Einflussreiche schwarze Persönlichkeiten wandten sich von dem bisherigen führenden Kurs der Missionare ab. Innerhalb der DRC begann sich seit 1929 eine neue Ideologie, ?Apartheid? genannt, zu verbreiten. Im Jahr 1929 beteiligte sich Du Plessis an der Gründung des South African Institute of Race Relations, das sich künftig als eine Institution etablierte, die sich der Verständigung zwischen den Bevölkerungsgruppen in Südafrika verpflichtet fühlt. Seine liberalen Haltungen, insbesondere zur Genesis, die er nicht wörtlich verstanden wissen wollte, führten ihn mit den calvinistisch geprägten Vertretern der DRC in eine lange Kontroverse. Seine umstrittenen Äußerungen als liberaler Theologe erzeugten in der DRC-Synode kritische Gegenreaktionen. Die Western Cape Synode der DRC erklärte schließlich die Evolution zur Häresie. Infolge dieses Konfliktes suspendierte man ihn und er verlor später seine Anstellung als Professor an der Universität Stellenbosch. Gegen diese Entscheidung klagte Du Plessis und gewann den Prozess.
