So far Papua New Guinea has been largely sheltered from these forces. But we are not so cut off that we are not affected. Our future is a continuing challenge and we intend to pursue with vigorous determination the policies and programmes that have served us so well in our early years. . We believe that we are fortunate that the many ills of the Western world have not been felt on a wide scale in our country. Inflation does not erode our wealth as quickly as it accumulates industrialisation has not polluted our air rivers and oceans. We have room to live and breathe peacefully. . Stato di conservazione: Un alone (presumibilmente causato da una pregressa umidità) sul margine verticale bianco (bordo) delle pagine interne (su molte appena visibile, su altre leggermente più marcato); un timbro riportante il nome di un antico proprietario sulla prima pagina bianca ed una firma d'appartenenza a penna sul frontespizio; un forellino di tarlo sul bordo bianco inferiore della pianta geografica fuori testo; un minuscolo foro sul foglio che contiene la pagina 269-270, uno strappo (senza mancanza) sul bordo bianco verticale del foglio che contiene le pagine 399-400,qualche leggero segno d'usura sulla coperta e sul dorso ma, nel complesso, un esemplare abbastanza ben conservato. la presente inserzione fa riferimento esclusivamente al tomo secondo di quest'opera. 1749 À Paris, chez Didot, 1749. Réédition en petit format de ce volume paru chez le même éditeur au format in-4 en 1747. Comprenant 13 gravures hors texte et un bandeau. Cette édition diffère de l'originale par le choix des illustrations, les 11 cartes de la première édition étant remplacées ici par 12 gravures de la faune africaine. Seule la gravure intitulée "Circoncision des Nègres" est commune aux deux éditions. In-12 de 486 pp., 10 x 17 cm., avec un lexique français-jalof-fouli (pp. 101-118). Reliure plein veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné de motifs "à la toile d'araignée", pièce de titre bordeaux, toutes tranches rouges. Entre 1746 et 1759, labbé Prévost publie l'"Histoire générale des voyages", un ensemble imposant à partir dune compilation anglaise de John Green, "A new general collection of voyages and travels". Prévost fait plus qu'une simple traduction : il harmonise, réajuste, ajoute dautres chroniques de voyageurs et des liens historiques, supprime des passages, fait refaire les cartes et les gravures. Il abandonne au quinzième volime. Dautres prendront sa succession, le vingtième et dernier tome paraissant seulement en 1802. Grand succès auprès de ses contemporains, cette entreprise qui participe de leffort commercial et colonial de la France est également très soutenue par le pouvoir royal. Dos un peu craquelé, coiffe supérieure et coins émoussés. Intérieur très frais et exempt de rousseurs. Bel exemplaire, malgré les défauts signalés.
