Le récit revêt une forme simple, qui n'exclut pas les observations sérieuses et instructives. Les remarques plaisantes, les anecdotes, les digressions historiques qui émaillent la narration, la coupent de temps à autre et permettent de la suivre sans aucune fatigue. C'est sur la côte de la Tripolitaine que débarque le voyageur ; il en visite les ports, puis, s'enfonce dans le désert pour explorer les oasis libyennes, avec Rohlfs, et revenant au sud-ouest, celles du Fezzan et du Tibesti, avec Nachtigal. Çà et là le guide s'arrête, pour faire remarquer les ruines datant de l'époque romaine et montrer partout la désastreuse influence de l'administration turque, qui transforme les villes florissantes en bourgades misérables, et fait du Fezzan, plus grand que la France, un pays où ont peine à vivre 140,000 personnes. Le touriste entre ensuite en Egypte par le canal de Suez qu'il explore dans toute sa longueur, visite le Caire, Alexandrie et les autres villes, puis remonte le Nil, examinant de près les ruines antiques, et enfin, passe rapidement à travers le Soudan égyptien, qu'il décrit tel qu'il était avant la révolte du Mahdi. Un appendice, qui ne se trouvait pas dans l'ouvrage allemand, donne le récit de l'expédition anglaise en Egypte et du soulèvement du Soudan." (L. Sie ist eine der größten des Landes und lässt auf eine bedeutende antike Stadt an dieser Stelle schließen. Zeitgleich mit dem Ptolemäerreich und mit den römischen Kaisern war sie rund ein halbes Jahrtausend eines der Zentren des Königreichs von Meroe, dem als südlichen Nachbarn Ägyptens eine Brückenfunktion zwischen Mittelmeerwelt und Afrika zukam. Gemeinsam mit Meroe und Musawwarat es Sufra wurde Naqa als Archäologische Stätten der Insel Meroe 2011 in die Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes aufgenommen. ? Der Ort liegt etwa 170 Kilometer nordnordöstlich von Khartum und etwa 35 Kilometer südsüdöstlich des Nils. Hier treffen kleinere Wadis auf das Wadi Awateib, das aus dem Zentrum der Region Butana kommt und weiter nördlich bei Wad ban Naqa am Nil endet. Naqa war nur eine Kamel- oder Eselreise vom Nil entfernt und könnte als Handelsstation auf dem Weg nach Osten strategische Bedeutung gehabt haben. Erste europäische Reisende erreichten Naqa ab 1822, so unter anderem 1837 Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. 1843 wurde es von Richard Lepsius und seiner preußischen Ägypten-Sudan-Expedition besucht, die einige Inschriften und Darstellungen der hier stehenden Tempel kopierte. 1958 war ein Team der Humboldt-Universität Berlin vor Ort, welches den Tempel 500 z. T. dokumentierte. Ab 1995 grub in Naqa ein deutsches Team des Ägyptischen Museums der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin.
