Resoconto di una importante spedizione nell'interno dell'Africa - con solo dieci uomini armati - intrapresa dall'esploratore francese Parfait-Louis Monteil (1855-1925). Partito da Saint-Louis, in Senegal, mosse per impervie regioni alla volta del lago Ciad attraversando il bacino del Niger, toccando Sokoto, Kano e infine Kuka sulle sponde del lago. ‎Edition originale. Chirurgien militaire allemand, Nachtigal (1834-1885) participa à de nombreuses expéditions d'exploration. En 1869, il est chargé par le roi de Prusse de remettre des cadeaux au sultan de Bornou. Son périple, ici consigné, durera cinq ans. Parti de Tripoli, il traverse la région saharienne du Tibesti et atteint Bornou en 1871, d'où il repart pour aller à Bagirmi, Wadai, Kordofan et Khartoum en 1874. Rare complet. Bon état d’occasion‎

Da Kuka intraprese poi diversi viaggi in regioni ancora inesplorate (Kanem, Borku, Baghirmi, Uadai), rientrando dopo sei anni al Cairo. Morì per le febbri contratte mentre rientrava da una missione nella Guinea (Camerun). ‎Gutes Ex., Umschl. stw. berieben. - 1868 übernahm der 34jährige Dr. med. Gustav Nachtigal, von dem in dieser Mission gescheiterten Gerhard Rohlfs den Auftrag des preußischen Königs dem Scheich Omar in Kuka am Tschadsee eine Sendung kostbarer Geschenke als Dank für die freundliche Aufnahme deutscher Reisender zu überbringen. Durch seine Vertrautheit mit arabischer Sprache, Denkweise und orientalischer Diplomatie schien der ehemalige Militärarzt in Köln, der wegen eines Lungenleidens in Nordafrika lebte, geradezu prädestiniert, diesen Auftrag erfolgreich durchzuführen. Der erste Teil von Nachtigals Aufzeichnungen schildert auf ebenso packende wie erschütternde Weise die überall drohenden Gefahren für Leib und Leben und die unmenschlichen Strapazen, denen er und seine wenigen Begleiter ausgesetzt waren, als sie Tibesti, das noch von keinem Europäer betretene Hochgebirge der Riesenkrater im Herzen der Sahara erforschten, dort als Spione hingerichtet werden sollten, sich jedoch in einer tollkühnen Flucht durch die Wüste retten konnten. Nachtigals Beschreibung seiner Abenteuer bewirkte, daß bis 1917, als die Franzosen das Bergland eroberten, kein Weißer mehr wagte, seinen Fuß in dieses Gebiet zu setzen. Der zweite Teil hält den weiteren Verlauf der Expedition fest, die über den regierungsamtlichen Auftrag hinaus insgesamt fast sechs Jahre dauerte. Nachtigal erforschte die unbekannten Tschadsee-Länder, durchstreifte Bornu, Kanem und die Gebiete Bagirmis und beschloß, sich über Wadai, das seit der Ermordung Vogels und Beurmanns als Todesfalle für Europäer galt, und Kordofan zum Nil durchzuschlagen ?
