Etiopia. Saggio di un outsider a tempo determinato

Il libro contiene ricostruzioni storiche ed analisi antropologiche sulle popolazioni incontrate, numerosi raffronti tra quanto descritto nella spedizione Bòttego e la realtà attuale delle tribù incontrate, i problemi che affliggono queste regioni, come l'arretratezza economica estrema ed i violenti contrasti etnici tuttora esistenti, aggravati dal passaggio dalle lance al Kalashnikov e da quanto sta da tempo modificando le popolazioni del sud e provocando quella che, comunque la si guardi e che piaccia o no, è evoluzione. Una evoluzione che porterà forse alla scomparsa delle popolazioni indigene distribuite lungo il fiume Omo. Sono inoltre presenti riflessioni su quella che lui definisce "una tribù in transito", rappresentata dal gruppo che con lui si è avventurato in quella parte difficile di Africa. Non vi è, infatti, solo la descrizione di un viaggio nelle Lowlands africane alla ricerca di diverse culture e del loro esotismo magico che affascina etnografi e turisti, ma anche una descrizione dei turisti occidentali stessi, di ciò che ricercano e di ciò che si aspettano di trovare in Africa. L'occhio curioso di Massimo spesso si sofferma sul portamento e sui modi di fare di quelli che, come lui, si trovano a fare i ricchi turisti a spasso attraverso i drammi e le troppe contraddizioni del continente nero, descrivendo le dinamiche che si creano, il modo di porsi alle le tribù incontrate ed il sempre presente dilemma turista o viaggiatore.

First and only edition of this exceedingly rare book of Sahara and other territories of North Africa, written by Sadik El-Müeyyed, including his surviving report and travel account written to be presented to the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. It's a reference text that specifies the military and the political measures of the Sahara exploration, gives extensive information about the Benghazi region of Tripoli and about Muhammad al-Senusi, the leader of the Senûsî (Senussi) movement there, and his followers. With the impressive and enthusiastic expression of Sadik el-Müeyyed's descriptions, this work reveals not only the affairs of the Ottoman government but also the mysteries of the journeys that have taken months in the Sahara desert, uncovers the living standards of the desert peoples, and sheds light on an unknown aspect of the North African history.
