Single location on WorldCat at BL KVK adds a copy in the Austrian National Library lacking 2 plates; and copies in the Zentralbibliothek der Bundeswehr Düsseldorf and Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt Halle. Decidedly uncommon infantry manual for the Imperial Russian Army from the brief reign of Tsar Paul I r.1796-1801. Paul had travelled extensively in Europe and had developed a taste for French and Italian architecture and Prussian military practice taking immense pleasure in rigidly drilling his private brigade of troops in the Versailles-inspired grounds of his estate at Gatchina. When he ascended the throne he attempted to remodel the army along Prussian lines introducing entirely impractical uniforms a regime of elaborate ceremonials and parades and as shown here the implementation of rigourous regulations and drill. The present manual was directly translated into French from its Prussian equivalent the words of command also being given in phonetically rendered Russian. Paul was assassinated by a group of disaffected army officers after just 4 years on the throne. Octavo 196 x 110 mm. 13 folding plates at the rear; somewhat erratically numbered no plate 1 2 plans numbered 4 but apparently complete. Recent mottled sheep-backed marbled boards by G. Gauché Paris red morocco label gilt rules to the spine. Spine lightly sunned light soiling to the title page pale toning to the text-block throughout overall very good. hardcover

This is 162nd lithographic plate of the book. It shows soldier holding rifle with bayonet in his hand, and another soldiers who are attacking all together. Shipov was a Russian painter, a master of military portrait. Born in the province of Kostroma, Russia. Since 1875 was an auditor of Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1880 he entered the military service. Studied painting without leaving military service. In 1883 he graduated from the training in the Corps of Pages. Since 1904 - the Commander of the East Siberian strelets regiment. In 1909 he was transferred to Suites, since 1915 - Lieutenant-General. In 1904-1915 received numerous awards for his military honor and courage, among them Golden Arms. He painted portraits of soldiers, watching them in battles and having rest. He did pencil sketches and watercolor portraits. One of the main representatives of the Russian military portrait of the edge of the century.

8vo, br. ed. 653pp. Le nom de Iejov, ministre du NKVD, la police politique soviétique, est associé pour toujours au moment le plus sinistre de l’histoire russe, celui de la Grande Terreur (1937-1938) et de ses millions de victimes. Alexeï Pavlioukov a eu accès aux archives centrales du FSB (les services de police politique), habituellement fermées aux chercheurs, et en particulier aux dossiers d’instruction de Iejov lui-même et de ses plus proches collaborateurs, quand ils furent à leur tour arrêtés. Cherchant à se disculper, tous racontèrent dans le détail comment la machine avait été mise en marche sur ordre de Staline, et comment elle avait fonctionné pendant un peu moins de deux ans avec ses quotas de victimes planifiés. Iejov, personnalité banale, sinon falote, apprenti tailleur, soldat adhérant pendant la révolution au parti bolchevik dont il devient un fonctionnaire, s’élève peu à peu à l’intérieur de l’appareil grâce à une vertu que très vite relèvent ses chefs : l'aptitude à exécuter coûte que coûte les ordres reçus, sans états d’âme autres que la promesse d’une promotion. Petit, timide, piètre orateur, inculte, il serait probablement depuis longtemps oublié s’il était resté un homme de l’appareil du parti responsable des cadres et n'avait pas été, par la volonté de Staline, appelé à s’occuper de la police politique.Le lecteur suit pas à pas cette ascension, puis la chute quand Staline décide de mettre fin à la Grande Terreur et de se débarrasser de ses exécutants. Iejov fut un rouage essentiel de la Grande Terreur ; sa biographie est en réalité celle d’un système avec la part de hasards, de rencontres, d’opportunités de carrière, de logique bureaucratique et d’effets sanguinaires, dictés tant par l’aveuglement idéologique que par les circonstances d’une réalité qui échappe aux plans et se montre rétive aux programmes.
