(Fierro, 1212) ; "Ecrits tardivement sous la Monarchie de Juillet, mais leur intérêt n'en est pas moins grand : le retour des émigrés, Paris au moment de l'affaire Cadoudal, l'entrée dans l'administration des droits réunis, les villes hanséatiques et l'écroulement de la domination française en Allemagne, Paris en 1814. Excellent appareil critique." (Tulard, 1195) — "Les Souvenirs du comte Alexandre de Puymaigre sont écrits avec une évidente sincérité par un homme qui a été mêlé de près à d'importants événements et qui les a jugés avec impartialité. Bien qu'officier de l'armée de Condé et plus tard serviteur dévoué de la Restauration, M. de Puymaigre n'était rien moins qu'un fanatique ; ce n'était même pas un homme de caractère. A l'armée de Condé, il fut un brave soldat, mais, comme presque tous ses compagnons, il donnait au plaisir et au jeu le temps qui n'était pas pris par la guerre. Nous le voyons échanger des serments d'amour éternel avec une jeune noble polonaise, puis l'oublier pour l'as de pique ; plus tard, à Paris, en cinq mois il ruine sa santé dans le désordre, et dépense au jeu jusqu'aux diamants laissés par sa mère. On pardonnerait encore tous ces désordres en songeant que c'étaient là les mœurs ordinaires de la haute société du XVIIIe s.; ce qui est plus grave, c'est que ce légitimiste entre dans l'administration impériale au lendemain de l'assassinat du duc d'Enghien ; ce qui est plus grave, c'est que ce légitimiste, qui passe son temps à déblatérer contre le régime impérial, dénonce un pauvre diable de marchand de vins qui tenait des propos malséants sur l'empereur ; il pousse M. de Vaublanc, le préfet, à faire un rapport à Fouché, et le jacobin dénoncé est jeté en prison et menacé de déportation. il ne se donne pas d'ailleurs pour plus courageux ni plus généreux qu'il n'est ; il raconte sans vergogne comment, lors du choléra de 1832, il planta là sa terre et ses paysans pour s'en aller chercher refuge en Italie. Tous ces aveux dépouillés d'artifice nous permettent d'accorder pleine confiance à M. de Puymaigre quand il se dépeint comme le plus intègre et le plus équitable des fonctionnaires et quand il juge ses contemporains. Ses récits sur l'armée de Condé ajoutent plus d'un trait curieux et pittoresque à ce que nous savons sur la vie et les sentiments des émigrés. Le récit de son séjour à Hambourg pendant les derniers temps de la domination française est plus important encore, et ceux qui voudront juger Davout devront tenir compte des souvenirs de M. de Puymaigre ; enfin il devra être consulté sur les hommes de la Restauration qu'il a tous connus et dont il parle sans haine ni passion ; il a tant vu de choses et d'hommes qu'il n'est prompt ni à l'enthousiasme ni à l'indignation, ni à l'étonnement. Il volume è illustrato da 59 belle tavole inc. in rame di cui 3 in acquatinta (tutte dettagliatam. descritte), tratte dai suoi disegni originali; vi figurano: il teatro dell'Hermitage, il maneggio delle Guardie a Cavallo, l'Istituto delle nobili fanciulle, la casa del Principe Gagarin, la cappella dei Cavalieri di Malta, l'Arco Trionfale eretto per l'ingresso dell'Imperatore Alessandro, a Pietroburgo; a Carskoe Selo il paIazzo Alessandro che è il suo capolavoro. Prima e più importante opera monografica sul grande architetto bergamasco (1744-1817). Realizzata dal figlio, a quattro anni dalla sua scomparsa, venne poi ristampata a Mantova nel 1843 ed ampliata nel 1844 con la pubblicazione di nuovi progetti raccolti e curati sempre dal figlio. Rara "edizione originale". Cfr. Berlin Katalog,2776 - Millard Collection,108. Bell’esemplare con barbe. "Il Quarenghi, formatosi specialmente su Andrea Palladio, lo interpretò non scolasticamente ma con attenzione particolare a quell'armonia di spazi e di masse verso cui lo portava il suo gusto, già in precedenza classicheggiante. Tale interpretazione semplice e severa trovò vasto campo di attuazione in Russia, dove si recò nel 1779, divenendo architetto di Caterina II. Il volto di San Pietroburgo in particolare è segnato dallo stile di ispirazione palladiana che l'architetto adottò per i progetti di edifici pubblici, palazzi, teatri, ponti che ancor oggi caratterizzano il profilo neoclassico di quella che è considerata la città più europea di tutta la Russia".
