8vo, br. ed. 200pp. Dmitrij Merezkovskij (1865-1941) è uno dei più rappresentativi esponenti della rinascita filosofica, religiosa e poetico-letteraria russa che, a cavallo fra il XIX e il XX sec., è violentemente interrotta dalla rivoluzione e dall'emigrazione di gran parte dei suoi artefici; lo stesso Merezkovskij emigra a Parigi, diventando uno dei capi carismatici dell'intelligencija russa in esilio. "Gogol' e il diavolo" è un emblematico esempio della critica "soggettivo-psicologica", di cui l'autore fu uno dei massimi esponenti. Motivo conduttore è il significato della presenza demoniaca nell'arte e nella vita di Gogol': la sua opera è presentata come uno sfibrante corpo a corpo fra l'uomo e il maligno, vera anima dei protagonisti delle "Anime morte" e del "Revisore": cicikov e Chlestakov. La doppia faccia dell'elemento demoniaco emerge dall'incalzante analisi delle opere e di ampi passi delle lettere. Ne risulta il ritratto a tinte forti di una personalità lacerata, ad un tempo fosco monaco e giovane cosacco: disarmonia, contradizione, caos contrassegnano l'opera, la religiosità e la stessa esistenza quotidiana di Gogol'.

Si pensava fossero state distrutte dalla furia iconoclasta dello stalinismo, e invece erano state salvate da ignoti operai, nascoste per settant'anni sotto uno strato gentile di intonaco.
