‎"M. Boris Wartanoff fut « prisonnier de guerre en Asie-Mineure » dans les conditions suivantes : De nationalité russe, mais ayant été élevé en Suisse, il éprouva, à vingt-trois ans, l'impérieux désir de connaître son pays. D'autant que certaines fréquentations lui avaient inspiré quelque sympathie à l'égard du gouvernement des Soviets. Comment il dut déchanter, il l'a raconté dans un précédent ouvrage, “Un Russe retrouve son pays”. Il y vit sa famille réduite à une situation déplorable. Lui-même, pour n'avoir pas assez dissimulé son intention de fuite, fut enfermé dans les geôles du Guépéou. Il en sortit pourtant (après quelles difficultés !) et sous les balles bolchévistes, en passant la frontière turque non loin de la frontière persane, sans papiers et sans grandes ressources. Mais il ignorait que, partie pour se garer d'un afflux de bolchevisants miséreux et propagandistes, partie en vertu d'un traité, par quoi elle s'est engagée à rendre aux Soviets ceux de leurs nationaux qui se seraient réfugiés sur son territoire, la Turquie traquait les malheureux Russes en rupture de ban. D'autre part en mauvais termes avec l'Allemagne, elle traitait en espions les sujets allemands abordant la Turquie sans papiers et par l'une de ses zones militarisées, comme venait de le faire Boris. Celui-ci, heureusement, quoique dans un piteux état, comprit vite la chose et se prétendit mordicus citoyen français, ne demandant qu'à être mené auprès d'un consul français. Quelles difficultés, quelles souffrances il dut encore endurer ; traversant toute l'Asie-Mineure à pied, encadré de gendarmes durs et brutaux, avant d'aborder Constantinople, puis d'être « rapatrié » jusqu'à Marseille et Paris, c'est ce que son livre nous raconte, sans rancune ni grandiloquence. On ne reprendra plus notre homme à faire le voyage de Russie, aller et retour. Ce.retour nous aura du moins valu, à nous, d'intéressantes impressions sur l'Asie-Mineure d'après-guerre et sur tant de villes qui passèrent, au cours des âges, entre tant de mains différentes : Erzéroum, Trébizonde, etc." (Revue des lectures, 1935)‎

‎Etat très satisfaisant (rel. lég. frottée). Peu courant. Stanley Washburn (1878-1950) était un journaliste américain, fils d'un sénateur (William Drew Washburn) et originaire de Minneapolis. Il commença une carrière de correspondant de guerre pendant la guerre Russo-Japonaise, en accompagnant les troupes japonaises du général Nogi. Penant la Première Guerre mondiale, il fut le "Special War Correspondent" du Times sur le front Russe, de Septembre 1914 à 1916. En 1917, après avoir été incorporé dans l'armée américaine, il reviendra brièvement en Russie (à Vladivostok) pour le compte du gouvernement américain, puis sera envoyé en France, où il combattra au sein de la 26th division U.S.‎

‎Passionnante autobiographie de Joseph Water, né à Cucq le 15 avril 1876, mort le 23 août 1968. Une vie qui commença par de nombreux voyages (Algérie, Angleterre, Russie, etc...), qu'il relate longuement dans ses mémoires ; il fut notamment au service d'un Prince russe (Ouroussoff). De retour à Paris Plage en 1901, il dirigea l'hôtel Duboc et fonda après la première guerre la "société anonyme étaploise de transport maritime" On joint le texte photocopié d'une brève biographie de l'auteur par Henri Lepretre. Etat satisfaisant (second plat découpé, bon état par ailleurs) pour ce passionnant témoignage ; le long passage sur la Russie, en particulier l'Ukraine (où le Prince Ouroussov disposait à Emilovka - Yemylivka - d'une propriété de 3500 hectares de culture) et Odessa où il passa l'hiver, est remarquable.‎
