Bjorkman Tom
Russia's Road to Deeper Democracy
Washington D. C. U. S.a.: Brookings Inst Press. New with no dust jacket. 2003. Softcover. Russia has embarked on a slow but steady path of foreign policy alignment with the West. President Vladimir Putin's market-oriented economic policies and structural reforms have added momentum. But in the long run the decisive factor in Russia's relationship with the West will be the nature of the political order it builds on the ruins of communism. Since the Soviet collapse Russia seems stalled somewhere between democracy as understood in the West and the highly authoritarian order Russia inherited from the USSR. Some would say that Russia is doomed by its history and political culture to a lengthy period of semi-authoritarianism. In this book the author presents evidence that this assessment is too pessimistic and underestimates the forces for political change that lie beneath the surface of what seems to be an era of political somnolence. The author argues that it is not the weight of history or the antidemocratic attitudes of the Russian population restraining Russia from making progress toward stronger democratic institutions but specific leadership policies and elements of Russia's political elite who have a self-interest in maintaining the status quo. This slender book is still in publisher's wraps. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. . Brookings Inst Press paperback

BLACKER, Captain L. V. S.
From India to Russia in 1914.
Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes & Condition: An incredible comprehensive travel account of Captain Blacker's overland journey from Northern India through Central Asia, and Turkestan to Russia in 1914, during which Dr. Filippo de Filippi was leading the Italian Expedition to the Himalaya, Karakoram and Eastern Turkestan in 1913-1914. Included in this report is a detailed sketch map of the author's route from Leh to Yarkand. 27 pages including a full-page sketch map. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. Small chip to front cover, otherwise this is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Excerpts from the text: "There was a great scarcity of men and ponies as a result of Dr. De Filippi's expedition. I managed eventually to secure two passable ponies and three men. One of these was a youth named Karim, an Argoon, who proved most useful. Another was a Tibetan from Gyantse Dzong, named Puntsog, most uncivilized, but cheerful and willing; the third was a Turk named Sidiq. The latter was a disappointment; though he had served with Sven Hedin and received a Swedish silver medal from him, he possessed neither endurance, pluck, nor intelligence..." "The hospitality that I met with everywhere from the inhabitants, whether Russians, Cossacks, Kirgiz, Tibetans, Hindus, Pathans, or Turkomans, must be experienced to be appreciated, more especially the goodwill of the Indians in the villages showed that their loyalty to the British Government was more than a mere phrase....In Turkestan the people looked remarkably well fed and prosperous, the astonishing lack of sanitation seeming to have little ill effect....In Kashgar and to a certain extent in Yarkand Russian influence was very prominent, not only in the presence of the troops, but in the trade and currency.... In Ferghana (Russian Turkestan) the population seemed even more prosperous and well-to-do than in Chinese Turkestan." End Excerpts

Blakesley Rosalind P., Tatiana L. Karpova
Russia and the Arts
4to, br. ed. 290 x 230 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. Russian portraiture enjoyed a golden age between the late 1860s and the First World War. While Tolstoy and Dostoevsky were publishing masterpieces such as Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamazov and Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov were taking Russian music to new heights, Russian art was developing a new self-confidence. The penetrating Realism of the 1870s and 1880s was later complemented by the brighter hues of Russian Impressionism and the bold, faceted forms of Symbolist painting. In providing a context, author Rosalind P. Blakesley looks in the first and second chapters at the portrait tradition in Russia: the rise of secular portrait painting following the founding of the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg in 1757; the shifting tastes of patrons and publics; the reception of portraits in exhibitions and collections (including those of the tsars); and the role of portraiture in the cultural politics of imperial Russia. Starting with the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867, at which a distinct Russian school of painting was recognised for the first time, the third chapter examines developments in theatre and music, the rising Realist aesthetic and the powerful voices of wealthy patrons from the worlds of industry and commerce, such as Pavel Tretyakov. Chapter Four looks at the rise of novel forms of visual expression through experimentation, from Impressionism to Symbolism, and the World of Art Movement, with its conscious reconnection with artistic developments in the West. The last chapter charts creative responses to political turmoil and social unrest in the early twentieth century, the new artistic societies and manifestos of the avant-garde and the dialogue between figurative painting and abstraction in the twilight of imperial rule.
