Circus Ephemera Russia
Hand-calligraphed Certificate of Appreciation to a Circus Orchestra Director
Petrograd 1923. Very good. Single sheet of heavy wove paper 13 by 18 inches with blue red green and gold calligraphy congratulating the circus orchestral director on twenty years of service. Addressed to Dear Colleague Stanislav Martinovich Novitsky from the Guild Collective of Circus Workers and signed by what appears to be all of the performers and workers of the circus. The St. Petersburg Circus was founded by an Italian immigrant Gaetano Cinzelli Chinzelli in 1877. Even though Cinzelli died in 1881 his family continued to manage the circus until the October Revolution of 1917. It is still performing today. We are unable to decipher the names of the performers except for one which appears on the left margin near the bottom: G. Chinzelli probably a grandson possibly the son of the founder. There are three horizontal folds in the certificate a little roughness around the edges and some light soil and offsetting from the gold but this is a very good example of post-Revolutionary Cyrillic calligraphy. In Russian. unknown

Clark, Victoria
Why Angels Fall: a Journey Through Orthodox Europe From Byzantium to Kosovo
Victoria Clark travelled across most of Eastern Europe to write Why Angels Fall. Having worked as a journalist in Romania, the former Yugoslavia and Russia for six years, she was fascinated by the Eastern Orthodox churches and keen to unravel their history and beliefs. To do so she journeyed from Mount Athos, to Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Russia, Cyprus and finally Istanbul, interviewing clergy and other believers. We're treated to a series of vivid cameos, a few of whose subjects glow almost visibly with holiness, a few terrify and many show qualities rare and needed in the West. As Clark puts it, after the ancient split between eastern and western Christianity, "each side lost something it could not happily do without . at the risk of over-simplifying for the sake of clarity, western Christendom can be said to have lost its heart, eastern Christendom its mind." Her keenness to explain Orthodoxy to westerners stems from a fear that the continent is in the process of fracturing along a thousand-year-old fault line, between the Catholic and Protestant west and the Orthodox east. The book combines high quality, highly readable travel writing with a powerful mix of politics and religion. Perhaps, most of all, it demonstrates the power of history, and of different peoples' conflicting versions of history.460p.+ plates, map. bibliograpy.index Book

Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers 1839. Enlarged edition. Hardcover. Fine. Small 4to 138 pages some foxing. modern binding in 3/4 morocco light tidal line on top margin. <br/><br/>" . the editors of the present edition which is carefully reprinted from the first 4to edition of 1810 have found it necessary in point of justice to neutralise some of the authors statements by means of foot-notes of an opposite character and more consonant with what was some years ago and now is the condition of the Russians. They have also supplied a few deficiencies and additional statements in reference to places of importance visited by the author so as to give the work much of the interest of a fresh production . an account has been given of Poland Siberia and other districts which were not visited by him in the course of his travels - Prefatory Memoir." Clayton Douglas J.
Dimitry's Shade : A Reading of Alexander Pushkin's Boris Godunov
8vo, hardcover, pp.xiii-220. Boris Godunov as the expression of Alexander Pushkin's thinking about the Russian state, especially the Russian state of his own time (some two hundred years distant from the events of the play), and even his own place within that state. Dimitry's Shade makes a startling departure from the traditional interpretation of Boris Godunov as the some-what awkward product of an exiled and angry young liberal-leaning poet who hated Tsar Alexander I, questioned autocracy, and flirted with atheism. Here instead we see how the play marks a sharp break with the Decembrists and Pushkin's own youthful liberalism, signaling its author's emergence as a Russian conservative. Boris Godunov, Clayton argues, can be best understood as an ideologically conservative defense of autocracy. In addition, Clayton shows that the play contains significant religious elements that have long been ignored by scholars due primarily to prejudices dating from the Stalin era
