In- 8 oblungo (mm 245 x 205), frontespizio, pp. 118 di testo e 40 tavole litografiche a colori (la n.39 dell'assedio di Peschiera non è mancante ma inserita come vignetta al frontespizio) e 2 carte delle battaglie di Magenta e Solferino comprese nel testo. Legatura mezza pelle, titolo e fregi oro al dorso.Titolo litografato a colori con vignetta, seguono la Prefazione, "Proclama di Napoleone III" stampato con caratteri oro su fondo blu. Testo descrittivo racchiuso entro cornice litografica (impressa in verde, blu, rosso, marrone) con motivi militareschi. Nell'indice dei ritratti al n.12 è indicato il Gen. Castelborgo, mentre al suo posto è presente il ritratto del Gen. Mollard. Edizione originale completa delle 62 incisioni (40 a colori, 20 ritratti su fondo ocra e 2 carte geografiche in b/n). Le belle tavole furono disegnate dal Bossoli ed eseguite in litografia da vari autori. Il ticinese Carlo Bossoli (1815-1884) pittore, disegnatore e litografo, fu inviato a seguito dell'esercito sardo nella guerra del 1859 e documentò con grande realismo gli episodi bellici. Il testo si basa sulle lettere dell'ungherese Nandor Eber, corrispondente per il Times. Questa importante raccolta di stampe a colori era stata pubblicata l'anno precedente a Londra con il titolo The war in Italy. Il successo di questo primo volume portò l'editore alla pubblicazione di una seconda parte, dedicata alle imprese di Garibaldi nelle due Sicilie e dell'Armata Piemontese di Vittorio Emanuele nelle Romagne e nel Napoletano.Qualche segno del tempo alla legatura, qualche macchietta e piccola arrossatura su alcune tavole, nel complesso ben conservato. . First Edition. Rev. Erastus Scranton was born in 1777 at East Guilford, CT. Educated at Yale College, he became Pastor of The Congregational Church of Burlington, CT from Jan. 1830 to May 1840. After retiring from the pulpit he operated his farm on Scranton Mountain, now Savarese Lane, and was Town Treasurer for a number of years. His hearing became quite impaired, the Congregation voted that he should sit beside the minister so that he could hear the service. He lived in the Barton House, (Later the Farmington Savings Bank) in the Center. He died Oct. 5, 1861. On the author see: From the NY Times: May 27, 1864 : "Some years ago there appeared in the Springfield Republican a series of letters from Europe, signed by "Dunn Browne," which were widely copied and much admired for their sprightly vivacity. They ware from the pen of Mr. SAMUEL FISKE, a graduate of Amherst College, in the class of 1848, and the author of a well-known college text-book, a translation of ESCHENBERG's Manual of Greek and Roman Antiquities. Mr. FISKE was a clergyman, settled at Madison, Conn., when the war broke out; but he left the pulpit for the field, and dropped the "reverend" for a Lieutenant's title. After fighting bravely in the several battles, he was taken prisoner by the rebels, and detained for some time in Richmond. During the battle of the Wilderness, Captain -- for he was promoted from a Lieutenancy - Fiske was mortally wounded. He was conveyed to Fredericksburg, where, in a private house, he received the attention of personal friends, and of his wife and other members of his family. br. Questa è la storia della leggendaria carica di cavalleria avvenuta a Balaklava il 25 ottobre 1854. Sventurati protagonisti di questa epica pagina di storia militare furono gli uomini della brigata leggera della cavalleria britannica: mandati incontro a morte certa a causa di un errore umano, diedero prova di eroismo senza pari lanciandosi al galoppo contro le bocche dei cannoni delle possenti batterie russe dislocate lungo quella che diverrà famosa come la Valle della Morte. Fra i valorosi del 17° reggimento Lancieri di Sua Maestà, gli uomini della Morte o della Gloria, c'è George Dillon, un giovane contadino irlandese dal drammatico passato. Arrestato insieme al suo amico Thomas per aver partecipato alla rivolta scoppiata in seguito alla Grande Carestia del 1845 e recluso nel terrificante carcere di Kilmainham a Dublino, viene liberato al prezzo di una divisa da cavalleggero inglese e un ingaggio nella guerra di Crimea. Laggiù George ritroverà la sua amata Janet, infermiera nell'ospedale militare, che gli darà la forza di continuare a vivere e a combattere. Ma i suoi fantasmi continueranno ad aleggiare anche nella desolata piana di Balaklava, fino al giorno della resa dei conti.
