Johan Sadeler I (Brussel 1550 - Venezia 1600)
San Giacinto di Polonia
Acquaforte misure: mm 220 x 167 I Sadeler furono una famiglia di artisti fiamminghi, principalmente incisori di riproduzione, attivi in tutta Europa tra il XVI e il XVII secolo. Lo stile dei membri della famiglia è molto simile e non sempre facilmente distinguibile ma per tre generazioni, spostandosi dall’Olanda all’Italia, fermandosi in Germania e a Praga, questi incisori, editori e commercianti di stampe hanno giocato un ruolo centrale nella diffusione delle immagini. Dal 1572 Jan/Johan lavorò ad Anversa centro mondiale della stampa, e divenne anche un maestro della Corporazione di San Luca. Con suo fratello minore Rafael il Vecchio si trasferì inizialmente a Colonia ma i tumulti della rivolta olandese costrinsero gli artisti di Anversa a spostarsi e così i Sadeler giunsero in Italia nel 1593 in particolare a Venezia dove aprirono una stamperia. Il culto di San Giacinto, santificato da Clemente VIII nel 1594, ebbe larga diffusione tra il XVI e il XVII secolo. Jacko Odrovaz è stato un Predicatore polacco, nato in Slesia nel 1183 e morto a Cracovia nel 1257, dopo l'incontro in Italia con Domenico di Cuzman decise di farsi domenicano ricevendo l'ordine di diffondere l'ordine domenicano in Europa Orientale. Fondò i conventi di Danzica, Cracovia, Friesach e Kiev, favorì l'unione della chiesa d'oriente con quella d'occidente. A Kiev, durante un attacco dei Tartari si dice che gli apparse la Vergine chiedendogli di portare in salvo una sua statua. Questa stampa è tratta da una pala d'altare, oggi al Museo del Louvre (Louvre), commissionata dalla famiglia emiliana Turrini a Ludovico Carracci nel 1594 per la cappella di famiglia in San Domenico a Bologna raffigura esattamente l'apparizione della Vergine. Rispetto al dipinto lo sfondo appare semplificato, tra le rigonfie nubi non ci sono angeli ma teste di cherubini, e la lapide che occupa la parete di sinistra nel dipinto scompare nell'incisione. Tuttavia le parole scritte su di essa ora escono della bocca della Vergine “Gaude fili Iacinte quia oraziones tuae / gratae sunt filio meo, et quidquid ab eo / per me petiris impetrabis“. La Vergine è comodamente seduta su di una nuvola, avvolta nel suo abito panneggiato, il Bambin Gesù a figura stante accanto alla Madre guarda il santo inginocchiato sulla destra il quale, con le braccia in segno di devozione, ascolta e osserva le figure divine. L'atmosfera argentea ottenuta grazie all'uso controllato del bulino, zone d'ombra costruite con equidistanti linee parallele, l'impiego di aree non incise in corrispondenza delle superfici del panneggio colpite dalla luce, conferiscono viva solennità alla composizione. Firma in basso a sinistra: “J. Sadeler sculp. Venetiis”. Oltre l'immagine due righe in latino "S.Iacinctus Polonus, S. Dominici socius et discipulus, et ordinis Praedicatorum/primus in septentrione fundator”. Impressione eccellente, fresca e ben contrastata. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Minimi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Filigrana: mezza luna. Bibliografia: Un altro esemplare è conservato presso la Biblioteca Casanatense di Roma.

Prima rara edizione di questa raccolta di componimenti del celebre poeta avanguardista polacco, Józef Czechowicz (15 Marzo 1903 Lublin – 9 Settembre 1939 Lublin). L’opera, che rappresenta la seconda raccolta poetica dell’autore, contiene i versi composti dal 1927 al 1930 e presentano la tipica impostazione grafica senza punteggiatura e maiuscole. L’autore fu il il leader della letteratura d’avanguardia e bohémien di Lublino. Autore dallo spirito visionario, combinava lettere e parole, spesso inventando abili neologismi, per creare musicalità e suggestive visioni. Stampò il suo primo lavoro “Kamin” (Pietra) nel 1927, anche se il suo debutto letterario si fa risalire alla pubblicazione nel primo numero della rivista Reflektor dello scritto “Opowiesc o papierowej koronie”, (Una storia una di una corona di carta), prosa poetica il cui protagonista è Henryk è un amante omosessuale deluso e un suicida fallito. Omosessuale dichiarato andò incontro all’ostracismo dell’opinione pubblica cosa che segnerà profondamente la sua opera letteraria e che rende oggi assai rare tutti i suoi lavori, molti dei quali andarono distrutti. Lavorò a lungo come insegnante. Fu amico di Czeslaw Milosz e Anna Swirszczynska ed aiutò attivamente Henryk Dominski, Waclaw Mrozowski e Bronislaw Ludwik Michalski. Allo scoppio della guerra lasciò Varsavia dove viveva da alcuni anni per ritirarsi a Lublino dove pensava sarebbe stato più al sicuro ma il 9 settembre del 1939, alle dieci di mattina mentre si trovava dal barbieri, rimase ucciso nel crollo del palazzo dove si trovava il negozio a causa di una bomba tedesca. Czeslaw Milosz scrisse che la poesia di Czechowicz è intrinsecamente legata alla cosiddetta ‘lirica borghese’ del XVII secolo e alle canzoni popolari, mentre colpisce per la sua musicalità armoniosa che utilizza onomatopee, strumentazioni sperimentali fonetiche e sonori neologismi creando così le assonanze originali tipiche della sua poetica. Una delle caratteristiche non solo grafiche, ma anche stilistiche della sua poesia, è la totale mancanza della punteggiatura e delle maiuscole. Milosz, che fu anche un grande traduttore, ha sempre sostenuto che la poesia di Czechowicz non può essere tradotta. Raro. First edition. Rare.

Born in Vilna to a poor family and educated at that citys Talmud Torah, Shmerke (Pol., Szmerke) Kaczerginski lost both his parents during World War I. As a youth, he was involved with outlawed Communist groups and was arrested several times, serving a lengthy prison term. In the 1930s, two of his revolutionary poems became popular in Poland. He wrote short stories with a radical bent and was a correspondent and reporter for literary publications, including the semilegal leftist press in Poland and the New York Communist daily Morgn-frayhayt. Kaczerginski played a key role in shaping the writers and artists group Yung-Vilne; he organized its evening events and was the de facto publisher of its three miscellanies between 1934 and 1936. During the period of Soviet control over Lithuania in 19401941, he was even more active in the field of Yiddish culture, but at the same time experienced his first disappointments with the attitude of the Soviet regime toward Jewish culture. During the first period of Nazi occupation, Kaczerginski wandered through villages and towns posing as a deaf mute; after many difficulties, he ended up in the Vilna ghetto. Kaczerginski was very involved in the ghettos cultural activities. As a leader of its youth club, he wrote its Yugnt-himen (Youth Hymn), a song that immediately became popular. In 1943, he wrote the song Shtiler, shtiler in memory of the mass murders committed at Ponar. Set to music that Aleksander Volkoviski (later known as Aleksander Tamir) had submitted to a contest organized by the ghetto, the song was first heard at an evening performance there and over the years became one of the best-known songs of the Holocaust. With Avrom Sutzkever and others, Kaczerginski became part of a group of forced laborers whom the Germans designated to sort Jewish cultural treasures at YIVO and other locations. Known as the Papir-brigade (Paper Brigade), the groups members risked their lives to hide the most significant items, smuggling them back into the ghetto or entrusting them to non-Jewish acquaintances. Kaczerginski was a member of the Fareynikte Partizaner Organizatsye (United Partisans Organization; FPO), and, since YIVOs building was located outside the ghetto walls, he took part in smuggling weapons into the ghetto. In September 1943, Kaczerginski, along with Avrom and Freydke Sutzkever and other members of the FPO, escaped from the Vilna ghetto as part of an organized group of fighters just before its liquidation. They joined a Soviet partisan unit in the Naroch Forests, where Kaczerginski fought as a partisan until liberation in July 1944. Kaczerginskis books describe the destruction of Vilna, the partisan struggle, and his own experiences during the Holocaust period: Khurbn Vilne (The Destruction of Vilna; 1947), Partizaner geyen (Partisans on the Move; 1947), and Ikh bin geven a partizan (I Was a Partisan; 1952) (YIVO, 2010).
