Bell’edizione di questo classico testo di geografia del celebre geografo, matematico gesuita Georges Fournier (31 August 1595 – 13 April 1652). Cappellano militare navale su una nave di linea, acquisì una forte conoscenza delle questioni tecniche navali e geografiche che lo portarono a pubblicare un noto trattato di progettazione navale, nel 1642 dal titolo “Hydrographie” che gli diede notevole fama image00028_clipped_rev_1ed è considerata la prima enciclopedia marittima francese. Geografo, astronomo, idrografo, matematico, Fournier si interessò a tutto gli argomenti legati alla navigazione come i venti, le maree, i porti, la pesca, il commercio marittimo, la costruzione navale, la condotta degli ufficiali e l’arte del comando. Autore anche di un trattato sulle fortificazioni e di architettura militare, pubblicato a Parigi nel 1649, è però, oltre che per “Hydrographie”, per la sua opera geografica che viene stimato e ricordato. Pubblicò anche un’opera sull’Asia e diversi trattati matematici. Georges Fournier fu anche insegnante di René Descartes. L’opera qui presentata, divisa in 12 libri, consta in una dettagliata descrizione storico-geografica delle nazioni d’Europa descrivendole regione per regione non solo nei loro aspetti geografici (mari, fiumi, monti etc.) ma anche storici. In-4° (32,8x24,2), pp. 194, (6), legatura editoriale in cartone rivestito di carta color pergamena, con titoli e aquila araldica della Polonia, bianca in campo rosso, al piatto anteriore e titoli manoscritti al dorso. Il dorso sembra essere stato rimontato. Conservati i quattro laccetti di chiusura originali, mentre sono cadute le alette in cartone che proteggevano il taglio laterale del volume. Piccola mancanza di carta nella parte superiore del dorso. Con moltissime illustrazioni fotografiche in bianco e nero nel testo, a piena pagina, raffiguranti palazzi, piazze, monumenti, sculture, dipinti. Nell'angolo superiore interno dell'illustrazione ospitata a pagina 129, alcune piccole abrasioni dovute alla rimozione di un'aderenza tra le pagine 128 e 129, aderenza provocata dall'azione dell'umidità sulla carta lucida del volume. Per il resto esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione.
