Alcune centinaia di soldati polacchi, che si erano nascosti in un bosco, nella regione di Lodz, nella speranza di poter dare l'assalto al vicino posto di comando d'un gruppo aereo tedesco, tenuto dal noto asso Richtofen, venivano improvvisamente attaccati da truppe germaniche discese dal cielo, cioè da un battaglione di paracadutisti, che li sbaragliavano.

Da 23 ore e mezzo l'uomo errava sulle acque agitate della Manica, a cavalcioni di una botte e, alle prime luci dell'alba, veniva avvistato e raccolto a bordo del ferry-boat che fa servizio, due volte al giorno, tra Dunkerque e Dover. Si trattava del terzo ufficiale di una nave da carico polacca, il quale, non volendo tornare nella propria patria, era riuscito, durante il viaggio, a farsi scivolare nell'acqua, a cavallo di quella botte, fiducioso nel proprio destino.

1644. Amsterdam Blaeu 1644. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 50.5 cm x 41.3 cm. Sheet Size: 65 cm x 56.1 cm / With Mount: 67 cm x 58.8 cm. Original map. In very good clean condition. Latin text on reverse. Beautiful and richly detailed map of the Duchy of Glogów/ Glogau in Polish Silesia. Relief shown pictorially. The Oder River dominates the heavily-forested landscape. A large decorative title cartouche bear the coat of arms featuring Bohemian lion and Silesian eagle. Explanatory box with map keys also included. In the opposite corner another decorated cartouche contains bar scale. Willem Janszoon Blaeu 1571-1638 was a Dutch cartographer atlas maker and publisher. Along with his son Johannes Blaeu Willem is considered one of the notable figures of the Netherlandish/Dutch school of cartography in its golden age the 16th and 17th centuries. Blaeu set up his mapmaking and publishing business in Amsterdam where he sold instruments and globes published maps and edited the works of intellectuals like Descartes and Hugo Grotius. In 1633 he was appointed map-maker of the Dutch East India Company. In 1635 he released his atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas novus. Willem died in 1638. He had two sons Cornelis 1610-1648 and Johannes 1596-1673. Joan trained as a lawyer but joined his father's business rather than practice. After his father's death the brothers took over their father's shop and Joan took on his work as hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company. Later in life Joan would modify and greatly expand his father's Atlas novus eventually releasing his masterpiece the Atlas maior between 1662 and 1672. Wikipedia unknown

Folded in quarters some minor spotting else a very good copy. <br /><br /><p>The Marquis de Lafayette the president of the committee once again leads a fight for freedom although this time only diplomatically. Lafayette subscribed 2000 francs – the largest subscriber. </p> <p> The presumed first printing of this broadsheet very likely an extra or supplement to the Journal des Debats a Parisian weekly with regular contributions by Victor Hugo one of the committee members and with what would have been a sympathetic political stance. The broadsheet prints the resolutions in favor of the committee in four columns dated in type at end February 12 1831. The committee members are also listed as well as subscribers throughout France and their donations. Victor Hugo and Lafayette's son George were both among the committee members. </p> <p> The November Uprising 1830-1831 Polish-Russian War also known as the Cadet Revolution was an armed rebellion in the heartland of partitioned Poland against the Russian Empire. The uprising began on 29 November 1830 in Warsaw when the young Polish officers from the local Army of the Congress Poland's military academy revolted led by lieutenant Piotr Wysocki. They were soon joined by large segments of Polish Society and the insurrection spread to the territories of Lithuania western Belarus and the right bank of Ukraine. Despite some local successes the uprising was eventually crushed by a numerically superior Imperial Russian Army under Ivan Paskevich. Czar Nicholas I decreed that henceforth Poland was an integral part of Russia with Warsaw little more than a military garrison and its university closed. </p> <p>Sympathetic echoes of Polish aspirations were reverberating throughout Europe. Under Lafayette's chairmanship enthusiastic meetings were held in Paris. James Fenimore Cooper the American author who was in France at that time was also involved in attempts to help the Poles. Money for the Polish cause was also raised and collected in the United States. </p><p>Although early reprints are available we have been unable to locate a copy of this undoubted first printing. A complete reprint appears beginning on page 19 in La Pologne et la France en 1830-1831 volume 9 Paris: Typ de Pinard 1831. </p> books
